ZG was a 20 man raid.

I started with WoW a few months after it's release. Being an Everquest Player who was burned out (and not appreciative of some of their design desicians) I tried a few other games like Shadowbane and pretty much wound up thinking "meh". I went to EQ II with baited breath when it came out and wound up thinking "meh". Then I tried World Of Warcraft since people were raving about it, and found it to be a much better game. I admit to some burn out with it, but despite having tried numerous other games, honestly nobody has yet to do MMOs better.

The potential to make a better than WoW definatly exists, but nobody has yet done it for real. Games like Age Of Conan wind up never turning out to be anything like the hype around them implies.

Right now I'm looking at the two new Supers games coming out (Champions Online & DC Heroes) as well as the new Knights Of the Old Republic MMO. It all comes down to content for the heroes games, and with Knights Of The Old Republic even if they get everything perfect they need to start planning ahead for "Sith Mania" and to keep the game balanced. I personally think Warhammer Online didn't skyrocket like many thought it would because despite being telegraphed a mile away (Road To War, forums, etc...) the Destruction side wound up being unbalanced, and everyone went to that side at least when I was playing. Being a good guy in MMOs is already viewed as being a huge gip (Penny Arcade flat out called rolling alliance in WoW being one of the biggest gips in the gaming world at one point). I half expect KoTRO to die the same way due to overpowered Sith (despite during this time period the Sith getting wiped out so badly that a few thousand years later nobody even knows what a bloody Sith was for sure) and massive "I want to pwn as a Dark Jedi" mania.

At any rate, we'll see what happens in the future, but right now WoW is the best thing out there, and I've played it for years. Not a great player, but I'm there, and I have eventually wound up seeing all of the "Endgame" content before it became totally obselete.

I started somewhere around version 1.8 or 1.9 of the original. I stuck with it until about halfway between BC and WotLK, and then I got tired of it and gave it up.

I had some pretty good times. Shame I quit before mages get heinously buffed.

Started at about 1.8. Got to 60 shortly before BC, then quit last year. The game because boring after getting to 70 and not being in a raiding guild, as well as the grind for anything was terribly boring. So I gave it up.

Funny story.

Girlfriend and myself both played from TBC launch, within a month we were both 70 and in a high end/progressive raiding guild when said guild went to the dogs we server transfered to another one where we stayed.

I broke up with said girlfriend 2 months ago and left behind a character with 25k in gold and the highest (lol) 25 man gear available pre-Ulduar (no idea if it's launched yet lol.)

She still plays. Heavily. I'm going traveling round the world :)

I really, really don't get how anyone can think WoW was better pre-BC. The current version of WoW is *easily* the best content and the best design direction for the game there's ever been.

Generally Vanilla players deem the current game "too easy" because players don't have to run a 40 man dungeon overandoverandoverandoverandover for loot.

It's an offshoot of "Warrior syndrome" it was better back in the day because only they could raid and only they could perform a role.

It's an e-peen thing for them and it's hillarious :)

EDIT: Max beat me too it.

Maybe it's a sort of elitism?
"Man, I like [band] before they sold out!"
Or nostalgia, or something.
That's pretty much all I can think of. Sure, I admit that there was more of a sense of awe and wonder pre-BC, because the game was still new and hadn't yet been distilled to an exact science yet - by Blizzard OR the players. Like when casters went just for stamina and intellect on their gear instead of spell damage, or when the 31-point Survival talent for Hunters was a weak physical DoT, or when the 31-point Warrior Protection talent allowed a fraction of your natural Spirit health regen to work in combat.

But the game's design is so much more intricate and varied now. I just did 25-man Flame Leviathan with my guild last night. Something like that would never have been in Classic WoW.

Yeah, pretty much. I mean, I play a Druid right now. I raid as Balance. I used to raid as Resto - because I was a good healer, not because I had to spec for Innervate in order to give mana to the ACTUAL healers, the Priests. All the classes and most of the specs are raid viable now, and that's something that NEVER happened pre-BC.

Also, that's why I'm looking forward to Algalon so much. To quote Ghostcrawler:

[blockquote]We let you see almost all of the bosses in Ulduar if you?re a reasonably competent guild. Algalon is something you have to earn in 10 or 25. This is not a fair fight. This is a ?Blizzard are you out of your mind?? fight. He feeds on your tears. [/blockquote]

I hope it takes all the "WAAAAAH TOO EASY" people and crushes them into the dirt for months.

I think that's part of the reason I stopped playing - When I first started, I explored every area.
Literally, every area. At like level 20 I was running around in places where I would attract everything within fifty miles. But it was awesome, because it was a new and interesting experience the whole time.
While the gameplay and mechanics have gotten better, I guess I just don't get the same rush from exploring anymore.

Or maybe I just don't have the patience.
And you know what? That's perfectly cool. I totally understand people who were hooked on that sense of wonder and exploration, and now it's old hat to them. I understand people not liking WoW anymore, maybe they've grown bored of it, maybe it's lost the spark or whatever. That's totally fine by me.

But that =/= it being a better game.

To Max: Don't get me wrong I wasn't trying to pigeon-hole all Vanilla players into the "fat, obssessed, cheeto hoover" box that actually get annoyed when things move on it's just the general response I got when I asked the "Why was Vanilla better?" question was in flavour of my original statement.

I joined the Day that my server, Garona, started. I was one of the first few players to get in and get booted after the realm crashes.
