OK, so my town gaming shops are advertising a midnight release of Halo: ODST. I've been to these midnight release events before, once for Halo 3, thinking that my copy of the game would be taken away if I DID Not stay up waiting at a store front for four hours not realizing that the game was still plenty in stock the next day anyways which could've saved me some Z's.

So are you an isomniac who waits outside Gamestop at 12 o'clock at night? Or the guy who waits till it's on clearance? What?

Opinions, discuss.

I don't really worry about getting things as soon as they are available. I pre-order the ones that are definately going to be good and forget about it...and get pleasantly surprised when they land on my doormat. I get alot of games from 2nd hand shops as well, if I'm bored I'll give just about anything a go.

I pick up the game I want whenever I happen to be passing by a store, like on my way home from work or something. I seldom make a special trip to get it on launch day, with the one rare exception being Halo 3. If the store I have my preorder at has a midnight launch of ODST then I'm all over that, but if not I guess I'll rock up at opening time to pick it up instead. Either way, I'm taking the day off because the wife and I are going to rock that shit on Legendary as hard and fast as we can then get straight back into multiplayer.

But most other game releases don't demand that kind of fervent consumerism of me.

Right now I just carefully watch steam every day/weekend, and wait for their sales. Sometimes you can get games that are still full price in stores for a fraction of the cost. I basically buy anything that's on sale that looks like it would interest me. Like I got Dawn of War 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC, and Company of Heroes for about $6 each the other week. Street Fighter IV was $20 last weekend, and I got Far Cry 2 for $15 last year (when it was still full price). I could go on... so I will! They had this indie games pack 'best of indie games' it was 10 games for $30! Thats $3 for Braid, Gish, World of Goo, The Path, Mr. Robot, etc. I think you'd be hard pressed to not get $3 of fun out of a game.

Basically, Steam rocks. If you were not aware of this fact already perhaps I have swayed you somewhat :p

Never been to a midnight release of a game, I always pre-order them and pick them up the day after.

A game I really want: I'll have it pre-loaded on Steam a week before release day.

A game I just want to play: I'll leave it a few weeks/months for the price drops.

Never ever gone to a midnight release, waste of my valuable sleep time.

This. Then Im not waiting in the big queues and I still have a pretty good chance of getting the game and I can brag to my friends about it.

Depends on the game really... If it's a game I really want, then I'll line up at opening hours (our shops never do midninght openings...) but if it's a new IP that I'm curious about I'll probably preorder and pick up the day after. And if it's a game I'm just curious about, then I'll let it be for some weeks/months

I normally get a game the day before it is released because I normally pre order from game which delivers a day before hand.

I went out for the midnight release of Halo3. But normally I go pick games up on the morning of their release day. Typically I avoid midnight release nonsense but Halo is one of my favorite franchises so I usually will go out of my way to play it ASAP.

I have two Gamestops near me, and usually one of em has the game I want without me having to wait outside at night or pre-order. Only ever pre-ordered two games. Halo 2 (since I did nto hate Halo yet since the multiplayer losers did not exist yet) and arvel Ultimate Alliance 2 cause even though I dont care for Juggernaut, I dont want to have missing characters in my roster.
