There can be other call of duty games besides the modern warfare series. And it would be kind of hard to another MW4 because
They killed Makarov and Soap. There isn't really much loose ends to go after now.
I know this, Treyarch will release a non-MW game next year and MW4 will land in 2013.

As for the plot, that's irrelevant, there were no loose ends at all at the end of Modern Warfare. You won, NATO and Russia were (covertly at least) in full military co-operation, the bad guy(s) had all been killed and the 'good' Russians had arrived in force to rescue you and take out whatever remained of Zakaev's supporters, having been given the excuse to go to full scale war against them since they were arranging nuclear attacks on other countries.

Yet MW2 still happened with a healthy dose of makeitaswegoalong-ium to create a plot. Price is still alive so the money shot character is still there, no doubt Makarov has some lackey we've never heard of yet who will take over and we'll find out that it was the Chinese all along (or something).

Modern Warfare is too valuable a franchise to end, it'll be back in two year's time.

Have you seen the figures? It is not going to stop until it either starts loosing money or they milk the franchise like guitar hero and people just stop bothering...ie it stops making money.

They will stop making it after

Call of Duty: Jihad

Where the games version of the new russian mission involves driving a car next to a church or school. The resulting outrage from both sides will lead to activision spontaneously catching on fire and burning to a nice crispy death for their sins.

When there is no more war.

But I don't think it will happen.

Because war, war never changes.

When it stops making money, which will take a sufficiently long time such that each game gets worse instead of better.

Also, I think it's funny that people are talking about the single player story as if it actually matters.

when they stop being able to milk a franchise that had a good run from 2001-2007 but now has been ran down and lacks whats made finest hour and big red one good.

so probably not anytime soon, but by god im hopeing the next one bombs like that nuke in charlie dont surf.

honestly, if i had a good story with likable character (see big red one) then i wouldn't mind so much, but they cant stop killing the player and i have no clue how this damn world war 3 started.

Difficult to say, as it keeps getting bigger and bigger. I voted "when it stops making money" because that's how Guitar Hero ended.

I don't think it will end for a long, long time.

But as far as when the series finally loses dominance, I am guessing about 2 or 3 years.

I am REALLY hoping that Treyarch is working on Future Warfare right now. Because that would get me to give it another shot.
Nonsense, everyone knows that sci-fi will alienate a large portion of CoD's fanbase.
And the transition from World War II to Modern didn't?

Then again, you may have a point that it will alienate those gun obsessed military marine people who just play these games to use the weapons they used in real life at some point.
That's the thing. And not just ex-soldiers. Alot of people treat it as the closest thing to real-life military service/real guns/etc. CoD gained more fans than it lost with the shift to Modern Warfare and its lowest-common-denominator appeal. The large portion of the mass-market who play it for that reason wouldn't play anything like Halo.
as a gun nut who knows several military people, i dont think thats the case, maby just the kids under 15 will think its the closets thing to reality. but honestly, im insulted by the lack of information and research that were put in these games. (the ak-74u is an assualt rifle! not an smg damn it!)

When Respawn Entertainment release their first shooter, it will probably be the first game to give COD a run for its money.

After that it's anyone's guess.

It's actually somewhere in between and has different classifications.

actually there is no in between, its an assault rifle carbine that shoots assault rifle rounds, yes its compact but its barrel length and caliber put it in the assault rifle class.
but on the other hand you can argue carbine is the inbetween class of its own, but it for sure not an smg when it fires assault rounds.
