I voted "specify." I suppose I would be closest to "they hit me first" but it wouldn't get to that point. In that situation, you never let them strike first becasue you don't know how good they are at fighting, whether they have a weapon, etc. If you let someone throw the first punch and they are a professional MMA fighter, then obviously they're gonna be able to put you down in one or two hits.
I also dislike the idea that fighting is a way to "settle differences" 50's style. If a situation comes to blows, I'm going to hurt you. End of story. One or both of us will not be walking away of our own accord if it gets to that point. Fighting is a last resort. So if I can end the fight without risking harm to myself or others, I will, even if they haven't thrown a blow yet.

Eh, I suppose you could make a case for self-defense, although even if someone is attacking you you're probably better off defending/fleeing than wading in. If you land a lucky punch and cripple/kill someone the courts aren't going to care who started it. It's still manslaughter.
No, lethal force is legal if you believe you or the life of another is in immediate danger.

Self defense is one but I voted verbal provocation. By that I mean people saying overly extremist views. They just need punching.

Whether something is an "overly extremist viewpoint" is pretty subjective depending on the relative environment. Is it right for the Morality Police in Iran to beat someone up for holding what's regarded as a liberal viewpoint in a western culture?

Self-defense or defense of others.

My first fight outside of my siblings was in Grade 1 and that was with a couple of 6th graders. They were pushing me around and I was pretty small so they didn't expect me to fight back. They also didn't know I had a brother 7 years older than me that picked on me since I was born. So the one kid got a bloody nose and the other got a black eye by the time a teacher found us. And then I was the one in trouble! I wasn't worried about getting in trouble with the principal, I was worried what my mother would say! And then my mother showed up at school and tore up my principal pretty good when the principal tried to tell her that I was in the wrong. My mother wasn't one that liked fighting but she told me it's okay as a last resort.

And that's what I've kept with. As a last resort. I joined a Muay Thai club a couple years ago so I could learn how to protect myself better and stay in shape. It's completely worth it. It's come in handy at bars whenever a drunk asshole decides to start fights with people. It's really hard to reason with drunk people.

I also went to a Brazilian knife fighting camp last year because just in case. And I learned a lot about disarming opponents, but the main lesson pretty much came down to running away from a knife fight. My instructor was really non-chalant about telling how to kill people which I thought was pretty humorous how he could pass it off as nothing extraordinary.

I'm a pretty easy going guy so I'll only strike someone in self defence. It says a lot about someone if they can walk away from a verbal confrontation without violently exacerbating things. However, if you find yourself on the receiving end of said violent exacerbation, strike away.
