It's not like animals are reluctant to kill other species, so why should we be?
Don't try to turn this on me by saying something like: "We are the more evolved species, we should not lower ourselves to their level."
That's grade A elitism right there.
Wow.....I LOVE YOUR POST!!!

I'd do it for food and probably for sport as well...PeTA can suck a fat one on that!

Yes, I think that the perspective from which the OP is written illustrates an incomplete understanding of hunting which indicates that the Oposter has likely not been very immersed in that culture.

Hunting is done for more than just food or its fun to kill shit with guns. Growing up as a teen, It was a yearly responsibility to thin out the local squirrel population in the fall. This was done for several reasons. First and foremost, If left unchecked it would be impossible to grow a garden the following year. Living in a place where a garden constitutes roughly 1/4th of household productivity the loss of that would be catastrophic for the family. Secondly what was killed was used. The meat was either cooked for gravy, or the lesser cuts of meat was fed to farm animals. Occasionally the furs were also used for various things.

Also, you have to realize ANY species, whos growth is left unchecked leads to an unhealthy population that has a tendency to generate disease, which can be devastating to not just that specific animals population but the entire local ecosystem.

Dont get me wrong. I absolutely love animals. However I am realistic enough to realize that part of our responsibility as the dominant species on the planet is acting as stewards of the planet, and as such it falls to us to make logical and realistic decisions that protect the overall environment. Some times that does come with the unfortunate task of culling.

Hunting is a primal part of our existence, and it is still a relevant part of it as well.

It is always acceptable IMO. Just don't over do it. Population control and what not. I personally would only hunt if I was going to eat what I kill but I see nothing wrong with hunting for sport.
Pretty much this.

As long as what you are hunting is in season, you obey and rules for that particular season and do something with what you kill, then i see nothing wrong with it.

When it's fun?

I dunno, I think I'd like shooting something once.
I'm tired so I'm getting the need to kill things...that's normal right?

Always. Hunting within season is beneficial to the ecosystem, as it keeps animal populations under control. The motivation is irrelevant.

EDIT: It's also worth noting that certain methods of hunting are strictly prohibited if they are likely to result in an inhumane kill. This includes the banning of certain firearm calibers if they are considered underpowered for the game they are being used to hunt. Just because unethical hunters are a statistical certainty doesn't mean that hunting itself is an unethical practice.
Pretty much this, when I moved from the country to the city I was amazed at how many people openly condemn hunting. Most are completely ignorant of what hunting actually is actually like, and the actual effects to the ecosystem (most are simply environmentalist to the point that it's pretty much their religion).

Yup, I totally support people hunting animals. Seems fine, seeing as animals hunt each other all the time and its perfectly natural.
The thing that throws off this equation is the unnatural use of firearms, which quickly removes any sense of fairness or sport from the equation.
If you want to hunt I totally support you, but first I'm going to strip you down, take your gun, hand you a switchblade, and then point you towards the nearest bear. Best of luck macho man.
Challenge Accepted....How thick is a bears skull by the way and will a bowie knife do the trick?!

I can definately see where you're coming from. I say it's best to hunt for food, but not for any reasons of elitism. I see no point in wasting food, hide, and antlers (using a deer or elk as an example) that can be used really. I went hunting with a friend once, and what he didn't eat, he sold to be eaten.

I think if you're going to kill the animal you might as well eat or sell the carcass to fulfill the purpose

There are actually ethics involved with hunting, and if you are really interested in hearing a good argument for hunting you should read Beyond Fair Chase I think it's called.

My husband is from a little ranch in Montana, and they say
hunting deer is a necessity to keep their population down (in their area).

They don't use camouflage, or deer piss, or hanging salt-licks, all the
cheating tools.lol Just a man in the forest, with a gun. They also save the
antlers, keep the skin, and use the meat. Basically they use the whole beast.^_^

Hunting to keep the population down and fun are intertwined, and are
hard to separate in this case. Since you can do both, when hunting seasons comes around.
You can enjoy being in the forest and 'hunting', feel manly, get a trophy, and keep their population down.
Thats a win-win for everyone, but the deer (one day they will rise against us!). lol

But just going out, killing it for a quick giggle when they are already scarce, and
leaving it there to rot, isn't okay.Well, not to me anyway.

hunting is acceptable once you can watch War of the Worlds and say "yeah, what those aliens are doing is fair", because that's what we do to animals, every day, and it makes me sick. i think people who hunt solely for sport are the worst kind of scum, they think an animal should die just for some brief entertainment

(in case you can't tell, i'm a vegetarian)

Do you have an invisibility cloak and kick ass weapons?.....I think the answer is pretty obvious here

Predator > Humans.... Seriously it took 8 of them to kill just 3 in the new one

That's a serious disadvantage XD

Always, until it depletes the natural balance of things.

Humans are predators and without predators the ecosystem is thrown off.

When its to control the population?
im gonna stop you there, as the most populated animal species on the planet, no human has any right to excecute another animal for over population. if we had any sense of justice, we'd all take shotguns into the local town with us and just go trigger crazy for ten minutes before picking up the milk
