It should have ended after the brilliant CoD4, but since that's a bit hard at this point since 2 games have already come out after it. I'll just answer now.
+1 internets for you sir.

Up until CoD4 the serie was perfect (i'm not counting cod3 since that's not a pc game) I enjoyed CoD MW2 a bit but with all the weapontweaking and killstreak bs the multiplayer wasn't very appealing. So yes after CoD4 would have been good.

Otherwise I would say now, since the original makers of the series have left (fired/quit to join Respawn)

The treyarch games are a different kind of game. It's more linear and less surprises and a lot less story driven. I have very low expectations for black ops.

There's absolutely no reason why it should end as long as there's a market for it. If people still want to buy it, then it's fine for Activision to make it. As with so many things people complain about, no-one's forcing you to buy.

After CoD:MW2 was released, but sadly time has past so swiftly since then that they are now making Black Ops so I'll have to say now.

I think they should do a sort of "Future Warfare". Because lasers would make Call of Duty better.
Lasers make everything better.

But if that's not going to happen, it could end later today for all I care. Saying I'm not a fan would be an understatement.

It's going to degenerate into another Medal of Honor series. Soon grandmothers will be buying it for their grandchildren because the guy at the counter said it was this great new game.

Infinity Ward has come full circle. It's like the dark side of the force. They don't even realize how it's twisted them.

"After MW3"

I personally dont give 2 spicey turds, but if it ended after black ops, my friend would whine, and whine and whine.... (several hours later).... because he wanted to know what happens after that cliff hanger at the end of 2.

I can hazard a guess though:
Soap and Price are now wanted for murdering Shepard.
USA is pissed off and kills stuff.
Russia also kills stuff.
Makerov Dies.
The End.

Until people stop buying it. I don't see why they should take off a game because some people don't like it if the majority of the market clearly does.

I HATE Modern Warfare 2, but if people want more Call of Duty, I don't have the right to deny them that.

Guess I'm a bit too late to say "inb4 irrational snobbery and hatred for a decent-at-the-very-worst game".

But anyway, I'd like to see them move the setting forward into the not-not-so-distant future. In other words, laser guns, rail drivers, 'mechs, all that cool stuff, but done feasibly rather than fantastically, in order to maintain suspension of disbelief. Two quick reasons why this is a good idea:

1) Because when you're working with hypothetical weapons that aren't forced to be based at least partially on a real-world counterpart, creating them to have specific roles and be totally balanced is MUCH easier.
2) Call of Duty is a good franchise, regardless of whether or not you're a hipster that thinks refusing to play mainstream games makes you an inherently refined and tasteful gamer, entitled to look down your nose at people that enjoy games for being fun, rather than artistic.
