Self-defence is fine. I'm not a violent guy, but if someone is trying to deck you or kill you or whatever, I don't see a problem with using your fists. But if someone is talking shit, no matter how bad, that still gives you no right to use violence. Same if you are angry, angry is no excuse to fight someone.
This.

I pretty much let insults slip by (and also make a comeback most of the time) but try to harm me (or someone else) and I'll hurt you bad.

Only to defend myself and others, such as family, friends and loved ones...I would kick arse and mabey even have to kill them or the thing that is attacking us.

For defense or yourself or others that you care about, obviously, but not just physical defense. Defense of emotional wellbeing, feeling, status, etc. can all warrant a good ass-kicking. If someone is threatening you, someone you care about, something you care about, or something you want, ass-kickery may in fact be in order.

I once had to kick a bit of ass to get an annoying, drunk, belligerent freshman to leave me the fuck alone, for example. I was not in physical danger, dispite her drunken "punches," but my sanity and patience were in danger. Thus: ass-kickery.

Then again, and I'd like to clarify this point, I've never been in a situation where a lack of violent action would result in my own death, or a loved one's. If I did face such a situation, and I was in danger, I don't think I would attack. But, if my brother, or my partner, were in that situation I'm not sure if my reaction would be the same.
I don't think you'd have much of a choice on it. You'd either be scared into shock or you'd fight back. When under extreme stress like that, your body doesn't tend to give a shite about your politics it'll just do what it can to survive, if not, just freeze up. You'll probably not even realize you've thrown the punch until its actually hit the guy in the face...

As for you pacifism... Well that's you choice, long as you don't berate me for my violence, both in the gym as part of sparring or when I'm in a situation that calls for violent action lest risk my own life... Then we're perfectly fine on it.

The way I classify violence is that it is a physical act meant to cause pain, and or damage your opponent. If you spar, not to hurt someone, but rather as exercise or a release. Or w/e, unless it is explicitly to cause pain or physical damage, then I wouldn't call that violence.

And to each his own, as always. (Unless you're gonna hurt me, or anyone in fact. Then I'll gladly condemn you)

This!
As long as it's a justified reason, and yes, there are plenty of justified reasons to kick ass!

Well when sparring its a little difficult to explain but you are intending on hurting your opponent, your throwing your fists and feet with the intent on doing some minor damage however most places, its not meant to be anything permanent... I guess its context. Your still punching and kicking but there's not intention to cause any damage other than maybe a bit of soarness that night... A bruise at the most. Generally done to help both sides.

In a real fight, your just intending to hurt the other guy and hurt him hard. Its kind of hard to explain but I guess the context that its presented when sparring means that its pretty friendly.

Not if I can help it :). Outside the gym or the ring/cage I tend to stay on the more pacifist side if I can. However I will defend myself if the situation calls for it. Preferring to use throws and locks to subdue the attackers causing as little damage as possible. However if that's not possible or not working out, I resort to ol'fashion wallopings.
