EDIT: Since 99% of people didn't really get it, I was mostly referring to something you saw when you were actually playing an actual Duke Nukem game and thought "Hey, that's sexist."

You see this claim a lot, but it pretty much reeks of "I heard it on the internet so it must be true" syndrome. It's probably the first time Fox News has ever been taken seriously on anything they've said by the internet ever.

So, having never actually seen even so much as a kitchen joke out of him, I'm genuinely curious.

Also, to go ahead and clear out some near misses, strippers, prostitutes, and women who are portrayed actually enjoying sex, don't really count as sexism, regardless of what the Vatican says.

But they are portraying them as objects... like the majority of games.

Yeah, they're portrayed as objects, but to the duke everything is an instrument to satisfy his needs. Women can do this in a sexual way, guns can do this in an arse kicking way, etc. He's so egocentric it all revolves around him. It's not sexist, it'd be sexist if only women were objectified, but everything is objectified to the duke, so there's no discrimination...

I would agree that strippers and prostitutes don't really count, as their job description is essentially professional objectification target. That's what they signed up for, the jobs exist in real life, its not twisting people's perception of women.

If you want to then get into whether its right for that to happen you have to talk about the validity of those professions (or whatever you want to call them), and the life stories and motivations of the individuals who are in them (who in this case are fictional to begin with). It isn't a problem the video game needs to worry about, especially when its not intended for children and has humorous overtones.

The people who claim he's sexist are the same kind of people who are outraged when they read A Modest Proposal. He is a satirical character. He was created to play the macho action hero character to such an extreme specifically to make fun of it.

This is poorly explained at best. You should probably go ahead and explain what that even means, as it's said so often it doesn't actually have any meaning anymore.

The Duke does seem to objectify everything ever. Should space pigs (or whatever) complain about the racial discrimiation he so clearly holds?

Duke Nukem stereotypes the "manly man in a manly mans world" in just about every way, so of course it's sexist. That said, it's tongue is planted firmly in cheek and the question is whether or not that's a problem.

I'd agree, but given that Duke is about a guy who loves strippers, it could be construed as "strippers are awesome, we need more strippers." Women wanting to be strippers isn't sexist, men expecting them to be is.

So - do I think DN is sexist and am I offended by it? Nope. Do I see how other people could miss "the joke" and find it distasteful - absolutely.

Right, no, that's what I meant.

What does "Sexual Object" even mean? It gets thrown around a lot but never actually explained.

Also, no, I dunno if name game did anything about that, it's just that stupid looking picture of geohot that the escapist always uses in news about him, and I thought it really called for some filler to explain why his arms were fully extended while sitting down. If I was better at MS paint I would have put in a deck of cards being shuffled through the air over his head, but I was too lazy.

A character how is there just for eye candy, they have, or foremostly don't need any personality. I dunno Ivy from Soul Calibur.

I think this [http://borderhouseblog.com/?p=4375] post makes a solid argument. It is worthwhile for the last three sections (viz. Randy Pitchford interviews; Isn't it ironic?; Teaching tool) alone.

It's satire. Apparently the most impossible form of humor to grasp for people on the internet.

That seems like a stretch. Generally speaking, muscularly manly men with brick walls for personality aren't considered to be objectifying men, just faceless support characters. Why is it different for women?

Because men in games are percieved as gods, like becoming immune to bullets by hiding behind a wall. Tell me how many compentant female characters are there in games? The Boss n' Alyx Vance only spring to mind.

The entire series is about Duke loving himself and being like, the coolest person on the planet.

I, personally, would totally get naked around Duke if I was a woman. And he was real.

what I want to know is why can a woman say half naked female booth babes in cosplay is off putting because of sexism but if I was to avoid a covention because of male booth babes in sexual charged clothing were in attendace the reason of avoiding sexism would be labled as me being homophobic and sexually insecure.

Except satire involves pointing out what's wrong with the offending behaviour, ideology or lifestyle. The series used to be able to manage that... somewhat. But DNF is a straight up glorification of his character.

about next to all of them, gaming primarily deals in expressions of power fantasy, characters,
females included especially in displays of physical prowess often far beyond what real women have a capacity for, how accuratly does gear of war represent men?

you seriously can't think of

every 2d beat-em-up female character (too many to even name) ever or lara croft
Samus
ada wong
jill vallentine
sheva alomar
clair redfield
sarah kerrigan
Joanna dark
Bayonetta
Elena Fisher
Lightning
LuLu
Rayne
SHODAN
Brigid Tenenbaum
Aya Brea
Mona Sax

Sorry but that accusation about gaming has never stood up to scrutiny
