You know, I don't want to contribute to FF7 hate, but I want to ask something honestly:
For those who say it has aged well, what is it that makes you feel that way? Personally, I couldn't get myself to play through even the introduction less than two years after playing it through the first time. I really thought it aged badly. (And there was a time I quite enjoyed it.)
As much fun as I had the first time, I tried playing it again in an emulator more recently, and I kind of have to agree with you. Not nearly as bad as playing Pokemon Blue again (sweet Jebus is it unplayable compared to newer games, despite the original generation still being my favorite set of pokemon), but it's astoundingly ugly and a bit wonky about some stuff that's been cleaned up/streamlined over the years since then. I could get over the ugliness fine if a few other things were fixed up a bit, but it doesn't help that the beginning of the game isn't particularly fun (for FF7 or Pokemon). That said, 6 is my favorite, and I kind of think it aged a bit better. In general, 2D games from the SNES and later hold up better than the NES and earlier, and a lot of 3D games from the PS1/N64 have aged miserably compared to the subsequent generations' games. Anyway, I have no idea when I late played it all the way through, but it was several years ago. I tried to get the fan retranslation of it working on my Dingoo a month or two ago, but something about the ROM hack doesn't agree with the emulator, so I may need to stick a newer version on there. Soon, too, because I think I've run out of other stuff to play on it after I finish Picross...
