The one and only time I've been RickRolled was a hell of a long time ago. Though I remember it not as a YT vid but a flash page you had to click dozens of dialogue boxes to exit, or kill task on your browser.

Basically, I have the original, <link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sT-d2kBn6fI>the mashup, <link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-acsLyb5vc>the 8-bit, <link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaZQLJJx9vU>the other mashup, AND <link=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNDQC_BQ5eM>FUCKING BOMERMAN all on a random rotation with the thousands of other songs on both my Ipod and PSP... So, sooner or later, it pops up... and, if I was wearing headphones, I de-plug them out of the headphone jack... or, if I'm in the car, the volume gets turned up...
That is how I never gonna give them up... or let the songs down... Or go running around and just desert them... I never gonna make the songs cry or make them say "goodbye"... Or tell a lie that would hurt them... (in the long run, that is...)

Last time it happened to me was when I watched the Christopher Eccleston Doctor Who season over the summer on Netflix. The episode where the vampire monsters eat the universe because Rose saved her dad from dying. The song plays on the radio.
I know it's a stupid troll joke, but I always thought the Rick Roll was a funny meme. No idea why, it just makes me laugh. Even when I fell for it.
All that said, it was better when the ads weren't so intrusive on YouTube. No surprise left since you have to watch a 30 second ad first which gives you all the time in the world to read the title. Shame.

Jokes on you, OP, I still somehow recognized that URL, despite it being years. Great attempt though =p
I think it worked because, like any good joke, it subverted expectations at your expense but at the same time was pretty harmless, meaning the "victim" can appreciate the joke without offense. Most attempts at "trolling" are often designed to offend or get a rise out of someone, this was just a simple bait and switch with a goofy song as a pay off.
