Or to phrase it another way do you watch game reviews as advice of weather to buy a game or not, or do you look at them more as a retrospective opinion of a game that you have already played?

Sometimes I'll look at a review for a game I might get, but that's pretty rare considering I'm almost always broke and make a list of games I'm going to get months ahead of time.

However, most of the time I'll prefer to have a lookback on games I've already played, to see if my opinions on it match someone else.

I personally use reviews as a vague indicator of a game's overall quality when I find myself interested in buying said game.

I usually use reviews as a basis for whether or not I'll purchase a game (because games are goddamned expensive), so I usually watch them before. It's helpful to really get a sense of your reviewer, though, so you can use your best judgment on whether or not their critiques will matter to you.

Mixed. Sometimes I prefer to have watched others not, but overall it doesn't matter as I never really take to heart what they say and prefer to see what its like first hand.

Ideally i'd go down this way.
1. Measure possible game's level of not-being-shite via available information;
2. Obtain and play the game if there's a smallest chance of it being good or enjoy the drama on forums;
3. Watch review.

As for influences on buying a game I usually go

1. Rental, or barrow, or play the actual game in some way without having to buy it.
2. Demo
3. Review
4. Game Play video
5. Screen shots
6. Trail/commercial

Reason being that unlike other mediums games are inter active, so just hearing about them or seeing them doesn't quite convey the whole experience. And obviously things put out by the company (like the demo or commercial) will just highlight what they believe are the best points and not give an accurate feel of the game.

I prefer to read the review and watch gameplay videos without commentary. I get sick of how the internet bombards us with videos, videos, videos. You go to a news site and a click on an interesting article to (you think) read: and it's just a video. You check out a preseason preview on espn.com and it another video. I like reading.

That said, it is helpful to see some gameplay before buying a game. I just don't want someone commenting and telling me what I'm seeing as I'm watching it.

I enjoy reviews more as a discussion of a game than anything else, although very few are actually good at that.

Reading is a big bad these days. Saying you're a big reader gets more funny looks than most every other hobby. Well, it does where I live anyway.
OT: I like to be able to agree/disagree with the review, and to do that I need to know what the hell it's all about. In other words, game first, review second.
If I agree with the reviewer, then said reviewer is a gentleman and a scholar. If I don't, then he's a fool who wouldn't know good gameplay if it came round to his house, slept with his girlfriend, hit him, then drove of in his car.

Probably when I have played, seeing how I will be able to understand the reviewer more easily and get the in-jokes he might make.

I like reviews to know if a game is worthwhile or not, but I hate reading spoilers if the game seems promising. Sometimes, like with God of War 3, I don't really bother reading the reviews. I know what to expect and even tho I havn't played the first 2, I decided to buy it because I don't have any other action games. I like vague reviews that simply say "the game is good in this respect", "bad/flawed in this respect".

The point of a review is to assist you in deciding whether to purchase the game.

If you've already played it, you can form your own opinion on that subject (or already have purchased it), at which point reading/watching a review is completely pointless.

I prefer to watch them if I haven't played the game. If the review is good, it makes me more hyped for the game. If the review isn't good, I drown myself in denial and convince myself that a review is one person's opinion. Either way, I can't lose anything by watching it.
