Was Morrowind all like that then? I played The Shivering Isles for Oblivion, and thought it was certainly the best bit of the whole game, but didn't realize it was channeling Morrowind....

I'd have liked to see a little more Troika love in this thread but I'll keep the faith by myself if need be.

That said, yea, put me down for Planescape. I'm just not sure there's anything fit to hold it's dick while it pees on the market today. There are great games now, to be sure, but there haven't been games on Planescape's level in the last decade.

Haven't played Dragon Age 2, but DA:O and Mass Effect1 were both superb so I guess I'll vote for them.

I apologize to the OP if you wanted the polls to clearly show the older games to be better. At the time of my voting, the last two options were dwarfing all the others except Planescape.

So what does that mean? In the opinion of the Escapist they haven't reached their Zenith? I would certainly agree with that diagnosis.

I wasn't looking for any answer in particular, I just thought it would be interesting to see what people thought - its interesting to look at da2 hate against this polls results tho..

On the other hand, its interesting that on the whole most of the DA2 people haven't commented. Its a pity, because I wonder how many of them have actually played the originals...

KOTOR is pretty dang high on my list. However, as a tabletop D&D player, I look forward to the day where a RPG comes out on PC or console that lets someone create a world, story, etc. and then allows a group of people to explore it.

i think it's very mean of you to make people decide between BG, ID and Planescape Torment. you meany!

[TL;DR]
however, i'd really like to know if there's some correlation between age and preferences; yes i'm talking about those who voted for ME 1/2 and DA 1/2. assuming people liked both franchises equally, i wonder if they maybe are too young to know the older black isle games first hand/from when they were released, and thus don't know whether they like the older games or not (because they didn't play them) (since in every hate-thread out there, there are lots of posts where people say they actually liked ME/DA very much)

and no, i'm not saying that DA/ME suck and all new games are shitty etc pp, i simply have the impression that older people tend like the older games better than the new ones. and no, i'm not saying there's no way that all who played ID or BG on day one cannot prefer ME/DA.
i personally like ME 1 very much, ME2 is too shooter-heav imho but well worth playing, but i didn't feel like playing DA:O (and consequently DA2) because i saw too much of that medieval-elves-and-ogres-and-swords-and-magic fantasy; i still started DA:O as a friend of mine recommended it, but the origins felt too limited, and after a couple of hours into the game i just didn't want to keep playing, so i stopped, end of story, no hard feelings.
[/TL;DR]

I will not vote because frankly I don´t think they have reached a Zenith yet.
They can still be making good games and I hope they will.

Unless you are predicting a downfall for the industry (which I don't think is going to happen), I am going to say that it hasn't reached its zenith yet.

I agree, especially as some state this outright. Of course, there is no problem with that, but I can't help thinking that voting for the 1 game you liked most out of just 2 you played is not really fair for the poll. That being said I also voted for Planescape: Torment. It's like... there is no contest.

Certain areas, certainly.

Mushroom trees in the Ascadian Isles.
Swamp marsh from Seyda Need to Gnarr Mok.
Bitchin' fantasy tree houses in the Tel cities.
A mostly uninhabited island in the far north.
An immense quarantined plague impound surrounded by the Ghost Gate.
A grass plain surrounding Vos.
The archipelago around Sadrith Mora.
The suspended water city of Vivec, where you can find a living god.
The ruins of Dagoth Ur, where you can kill a non-living(?) god.

Cyrodil (Oblivion) was like a march through several European countries.
Vvardenfel (Morrowind) was like a march through an alien planet.

Planescape: Torment by such a long way that the others aren't even in sight. It's a game that makes me sad every time I think of it, due to the knowledge that in the decade that has past I haven't found a game so moving, and most likely I never will again. I get seriously jealous of those encountering it for the first time.

Well, from that list my favourite is easily Mass Effect 2.

The old stuff has it's charm, sure, but ME2 has the immediacy of action-y gameplay combined with Bioware's usual standard of characterization all wrapped in current-gen graphics and animation and an original setting.

But as for a "zenith", they're not there yet. And hopefully they never will be.

Well, I haven't played any of the old Bioware titles (I know, I suck) but I LOVE Fallout. The first game is really a pinnacle of RPGs for me. So I guess it'll have to be that.

EDIT: Base of the poll. The real one is Morrowind.
