This generation is going in a bad direction, I do believe that motion controls have a place and in time they could become a valuable part of games. But for now too many people are being stupid and it's going to be nothing but shovelware. And the dumbass masses, the ones that, 4 years ago, would turn their noses up at games, are going to get them. We shouldn't cater to these drooling imbeciles, we should burn them.

So, I think it has potential, but we won't see that potential any time soon. So for now, I pass it off as a gimmick, like 3D.

I hate this new obsession with motion controlled gaming so much I don't don't know how to describe it.

Motion Controls are Okay, but I think that they're going to be a part of main stream gaming. Sorry everyone who hates them, but that's what I think is gonna happen.

They're a fine gimmick and can be used to bring back arcades. Other than that, they have no significant value. A majority of people playing games at home want to do so idle in their favorite chair, the floor or sprawled out.

Honestly there are just no games featuring motion control that I'm interested in. I mean, hell, I would buy a Wii, but only after I've secured a PS3. I don't mind the controls themselves, it's just I haven't found any games I like were they're necessary.

I want it to go away.

I don't mind it as a tiny little gimmick. A feature in a game. I loved how they put it in Killzone 2. I liked how you actually had to turn the valves and set bombs, or hold your controller steady to stop the cross hair on the sniper from shaking. It was a neat feature. That's what it should be. A neat feature. Not a main event.

I absolutely despise it when the whole damn game is about flailing about. It killed twilight princess for me as after an hour the joints in my elbows would hurt like hell as i had to fling my arms around hard just to get the damn game to pick up my movements half the time.

Edit: When the wife bought the new SH that came out on it she had me play it (She hates playing most games but loves watching them) and after i finished the game my arms had honestly locked up. I could barely move them as i had strained them to shit.

The only game i enjoyed was MarioKart, because i don't have to use a motion controller.

I lent the console to my landlords almost a year ago. They live upstairs and were are friends with them. I could probably call him and he would bring it down to me.

Yet i still find it to much effort for the thing.

I am not buying the PS3 move. If i wanted a Wii, i would call my landlord.

On some games, I can stand them. However, I've found that whenever there's an alternative (such as in Monster Hunter Tri or RE 4: Wii Edition), I always seem to default to the actual controller option. Guess that's what I get for being raised with a controller and a keyboard.

Console motion controls are gimmicks from the god damn stone age.

PC motion control designs are god damned brilliant. (TrackIR, Novint Falcon)

The same stance I have on 3D.

I fucking hate it and until they perfect the technology, it should just go away
*headdesk* You do realize that if there's no motion controller on the market, and hence no competition, the tech can't get better, right?

OT: I'm all for motion controllers. The market is showing that it is moving in that direction (for now), and, with luck, it should be able to create more immersion in games and help the medium grow, evolve, and, dare I say it, actually freakin' innovate. I think I'll just link my thoughts from another thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/jump/7.212385.7186322] here.

I think the problem is lack of one that works.

Motion controls could be cool. but the Wii motion censor even with the Plus is still a giant turd.

it's delayed and retarded.

I don;t want to be that guy but i take yahtzees stand on this

gamming should be about games not controlers.

and also motion controls with out physics is retarded.

but i will dissagree with him in that he states that they will never have any potential. They might one day. but it's going to take an actual console. As far as i'm concearned the wii is so far behind in capabilties and technology that it can't be considerd this generation. Not even close. Wii games that aren't part of the main franchises All play like shit.

I just can't understand the hatred that motion controllers inspire in people. If you don't like them, you don't have to use them, but it's pretty weird that people are now trying to find all sorts of theoretical arguments for why they are objectively bad. It's pretty close-minded, actually, because once you find a theoretical argument you like you can dismiss them without even trying them out.

Firstly, there are some people who say they shouldn't be used until the technology driving them has been fully developed. How exactly do you see that technology getting developed if they're never used? Do you think a profit-seeking entity is going to spend hundreds of millions of dollars and 20 years developing a piece of technology and only then release it on the off chance that it might catch on? I think the controllers themselves work just fine, so I don't really understand what technological limitations you're talking about anyway--even without Wii-motion plus I never had a huge problem.

Secondly, for those of you who say it takes too much energy, are you serious? I've worked some pretty tough jobs in my day, but I have never been so exhausted by the day's labor that I couldn't move my hands around a little bit. On the contrary, one of the things I like about the Wii is that playing it gets my blood flowing and tends to wake me up and make me feel more energetic, unlike controller based games where I just kind of veg out and lose many more hours to the game than I intended.

Thirdly, I think Yahtzee has had some pretty deep and fascinating opinions in the past, but his whole "motion controls are bad because they won't lead to anything in the future" argument is pretty silly. These are games. They are fun, entertaining, and if we're lucky some of them might even be a little bit enlightening. But they're supposed to be a way to make the time you spend on them have more interest than it might have otherwise. Do you people really play a game today and think "curse the imperfect present! This game would be so much better if my brain was wired in and I was fully immersed in its virtual world!" Is playing a game really just technological research that you pay someone else to perform for them? There are many cases where we must sacrifice the moment to ensure a better future. But isn't having fun supposed to be about enjoying the moment without worrying about the future?

I remember in one of Yahtzee's earlier videos, he argued against companies like EA who would drop titles because they didn't see them having the potential to generate sequels that could be released year after year. Basically, even if a game was good now, if it couldn't be good (or at least profitable) years and years into the future then it wasn't worth having. Yet the same thing he argued against he now seems to be arguing for.

There are some kinds of games that motion controls aren't very good for. But there are others that it works wonderfully for--are you going to tell me that Resident Evil 4 wasn't much more fun on the Wii? I think the problem is not with the controllers, but with the fact that game companies want to make one game and release it on all the consoles with minimal changes. This means that most of the games that are made are not going to really explore the potential of motion controls because they have to work well on normal controllers, too.
Yeah, it's like Yahtzee's followers are like sheep when it comes to some topics, and they just flock to his ideas, without any imagination of their own.

motion controls are reasonable BUT one key thing that annoys me is that people keep making games that are made around the controls not the other way round if they made a game with motion controls then it should be done the same way as zelda twilight princess where the motion controls arint key but are there in the background

Furthermore, "perfect motion control" would be impossible in my opinion, and I offer the following example to substantiate:
Kinetic Feedback. I swing the wiimote to launch a sword attack, said attack is parried by my computerized opponent, my arm + the wiimote will continue on as if the attack hadn't been parried, both breaking the immersion and being incongruous. For this reason, short of redefining the laws of physics, 1:1 motion control is unimplementable.
Really? You cant think of any way to create feedback? Now I know this sounds unreasonable but how about using magnetic fields to at least create resistance if it cant stop movement. If you strategically place magnets on a persons body and then use some strategically placed electromagnets to create a magnetic field in the right place you could possibly use it to create a feedback.

I just came up with that off the top of my head I'm sure there could be better ways. At least try to think of something before claiming its impossible.

I think if motion controls would have some kinetic feedback and were accurate enough they could be great.

I like Nintendo's application of them with the Wii because it still gives me a controller to use. With that in mind, I'm more optimistic about Sony's Move than I am about Microsoft's Kinect. Speaking of Kinect, I don't like it. I don't like that they've taken away my controller completely. I want to feel the the controller in my hands.
I think most people are just afraid of Motion Controls because they are different, and ordinarily I'd agree, which is why I'm not keen on Kinect which is too much change too fast, but the Wii and Move, I think are appropriately staged evolutionary changes.

Well, you just lost all your credibility. Unless you meant that sarcasticly, I hope.
Why? Because I generally agree with his points or because you just don't like motion control and never expect it to actually go anywhere?
