I work as a Store Manager in a shoe store. I'm the conscience everyone hates because I make them buy things when they shouldn't :) The environment is good, I've had two payrises since Jan 08 and two bonuses...the most recent being $1500. The bosses are excellent and my hard work is recognised.
wow thats almost unheard of in the retail business most times in my experience people will work their butt off and they don't even get a thank you from the upper levels
I didn't know it existed either. And it shocked me when after 3 months as a manager, I got a $500 bonus as well as a $500 rise in my annual pay in Jan 08. And then this month, I got a $500 rise again and $1500. I got my car paid off though :)

Part-time teaching assistant in programming. I'm very happy to have this job, though it doesn't pay much. For me the key perks are getting to be with nice and intelligent people, learning new things at the same time (it's amazing how much you can learn from teaching others), and having time left over for unrelated studies.

I have been a full-time game developer/researcher before. That or a similar job is likely in my future as well.

I am suprised that half of escapists voting have a crappy pay. I thought this was the place of all forums to find more educated high-pay people.

I work from home on the development of an alternative computing environment, consisting of:

- a new document-centric GUI
- a new multi-paradigm programming language
- a new middleware abstraction which supports collaborative multimedia authoring with resource transparency

The ultimate goal is to use this technology to write videogames. Without all of that it would be too much work for one person. Me.

I am self-taught and self-funded. Time rich, yet financially poor...

< ?5000 in my case

I love my 'job'.

I think it's probably a lot of people here are students, like myself, and thus have no income whatsoever.

I used to be a cinema projectionist though. It was a lot of fun since I was working by myself but having to sit through Harry Potter 8 times drove me crazy

I got where I am by doing nothing.
Since childhood I have always wanted to do nothing.
I'm happy not working.
I have no stories.

That answer all your questions?
My answer would be identical to this, but since I have nothing to contribute I just won't post in the thread.

Crap.

That. Worst thing is when I'm old enough to work we'll still be in a recession or in the middle of it.
The economy will have stabled by the time I get a job (currently 14). I expect the recession to last a maximum of 3 years (I'll be at college then and only have a part time job which won't be to hard to find) to a minimum of 2 years.

Not really, more like 5 years. Though it will have started to get better by the fourth year we're going to have to deal with this for more than 3 years, not including rebuilding of the economy.

No I disagree, I believe that it won't take long to rebuild the economy after we've stabilized it.

I work for target and make between 10-20k part time working dayside logistics. Targets awesome well at least the people you work for, they promote from within, recognize good performance, and have flexible hours. Plus a nice benefits package.

Well you believe wrong because its going to take a hell of a lot longer to become stabilised before it begins to rebuild. Have a look at the spiralling redundencies coming from huge companies that have been knocked silly. The intrest rates completely bottoming out and mortgage lending at a standstill. Foriegn investment and foreign workers leaving and how weak the pound has got. This will not begin to run around for another 6-10 years I fear. I believe that is the grim reality faced by many.

On the other hands my folks won a huge sum on the lottery and I have savings. Now I can afford to get on the property ladder in the next 12/18months and my parents investments will mature in five years with some fantastic rates being offered by banks. Funny atm they need the money. This crisis couldn't have come at a better time for me and my family.
