On new games? Yes.

I paid good money for my console, the game, the HDMI cable, and the TV it hooks up to. For the money I paid, if better look spectacular.

Or at the very least, a person should look like a person, and everything should be recognizable.

...not really.

Don't get me wrong: I love a game with good graphics. But it doesn't affect my opinion of the game as a whole, usually. Look at Prototype. I loved that game, though it easily could have passed as a PS2 game.

if you make my eyes blead i will not play your game, that's about the limit frankly, the top end graphics engines as of 2011 are good enough for me
anymore and you'll reach pointless saturation and the only excuse would be 'oh you can zoom in on that guy's eye and it's fully rendered'

graphical engines and fidelity isn't 'needed' for gaming, but they are certainly preferred in my opinion you can have a perfectly acceptable black and white 2d game if you have nice mechanics or fun game-play

that said, you you cant decide on an aesthetic or at least 'a plan' then don't bother at all make it 2d grey-scale and save us the pink and green and orange power armour with spikes and tassels.

They can make a good game better but they can not make a bad game good. That sums up my opinion. Really anything Half Life 2 quality or above and I really do not care much.

Graphics matter a lot in most cases, like in San Andreas (along with outdated controls, GTA 4 is locked in forever) but not in games like pokemon or with simple art.
Duke Nukem, for instance, doesn't bother me becuase it's doing its own kinda thing instead of an imitation.

I agree that its the visual aesthetics I judge it on, things can look good without being technologically advanced and needing high powered hardware. Super Mario World's visuals aged better than Super Mario 64, so the style they choose is more important than how much money they spend.

To me ugly graphics aren't a good thing, and they'll bother me for a little bit, but if the game is fun I'll get used to it and it won't bother me at all. Like when I play N64 games again now, its jarring at first compared to what I've played recently, but when I get immersed in the game it looks fine. Or Minecraft for example, its intentionally blocky and basic but I got used to it and now I like the style.
