My personal belief it that the human population is simply going to become too large to sustain itself. This, multiplied with the effects of global warming AND battery farms are shutting down, reducing food production, means that unless we can get off the planet, we're simply going to starve ourselves to death.

That or one country with nukes realizes that if they kill everyone else, they'll have some breathing room to solve the aforementioned problems.

I think if anything is going to happen towards the end of the world it will be the overthrowing of politics. Because of all this "big red button" conspiracy, people will likely get paranoid and take over (or attempt to) their country's government. Resulting in a breakdown of almost everything (justice, society, economy, food etc)

With everyone getting there hopes up that something will happen in 2012, when 2013 comes around, all of the people who believed something would happen will become depressed and commit suicide. With such a massive loss of life, modern society will be unable to maintain itself and everyone who's left will starve to death with no electricity or water. Of course some people will go on a crazy killing spree as well and who says it can't be a nuclear nations leader?

Also, the 2012 "prediction" is pseudo-scientific bullshit. A 400 year period of the Mayan long count calendar will be ending around that time, but there's no reason to believe that the Maya thought this signified the end of the world or anything else. The "end of the world" scenario was dreamed up an uninformed New Ager in the 1970s. Don't believe everything you read on the Internet. Or do you think that the World Trade Center was destroyed by a missile, too?

I personally think either a new Age will come upon us or we would change Species and evolve to a greater being. When humans cant breed with these new Humans, the new will become a new Species with an unknown name.
