I'd say SNES. I grew up mostly with the N64 and PSX but still love the old Snes and older games. Which you don't see often from people my age.

If I can look fondly back on something & refur to them as "those days" then it's retro for me.

If it's polygonoal instead or 3D it's retro.

If it came out before Y2K & is in 2D, it's retro.

If it came out before I was born, it's "classic." I could call them "retro" instead, but the term "retro" always makes me thing of the 80s & "classic" makes me thing of the 1800s :p

Genesis/SNES generation

Because I grew up with a PSX and N64 so I haven't had the chance to really experience those consoles. Altough my sister had an Snes with Super mario world 3 and a aladin game and those were f'ing sweet to say the least.

Retro is defined largely as the period during which a gamer started gaming or the period before he started gaming, depending on the gamer. Retro to me is Gamecube and prior because that was my first system and thus I see it as really old. The X-box and PS2 are somewhere in the middle, not retro but not current. That is probably just because lots of people still play the X-box and PS2.

The SNES, the amiga, the MSX2 and old 2D games for the PC, is where retro can be at it's best.
2D gameplay, refined.

I suppose the N64 and the PS1 can be considered retro, but this is really the worst place to be, with 3D models that look bad compared to the earlier 2D sprites, and worse, gameplay forced into a 3D mold that isn't ready for it yet.

NES is my definition of retro, since it is what I was first exposed to.

I view the Super Nintendo era as retro, since my exposure to it was playing my brother's copy of Super Mario World.

Although I do view the N64's cartridges as retro style.

When it comes to console gaming, I think everything before the 5th generation is 'retro'. That means the PSX/N64-era is the start of modern console gaming.

I'm with the majority, dude. PSX games aren't "retro", they're just old. (This doesn't mean they aren't still worth playing, but they're still not retro.)
