I don't actively seek my music out, but I don't listen to other people's opinions either. I stumble across it as I surf the internet. And that stumbling around led me to Anamanaguchi, and 117% Complete by Alex Day, both of which I like quite a bit.

Spotify's related artists feature. It's insanely good, most things are on there. Also, stuff suggested by Gill & Beez on the Metal Hammer podcast. I don't get a regular subscription to the magazine so it's handy. I'll admit that their suggestions aren't always to my taste, but they do suggest some good stuff (Volbeat, for example).

Other than that, I've gotten into some really good bands from seeing them support other bands. For instance, seeing Black Spiders support Airbourne or The Plight support Cancer Bats.

I've noticed a lot of threads from people asking where to find good music. I'm also curious about how the methods for finding music have changed over the years. This is showing my age, but when I was younger, I listened mainly to what my friends listened to and what was on the radio. We didn't have the internet yet, so we relied mostly on what was popular and what the album covers looked like. These days I use mostly internet streaming sites and following rabbit trails on YouTube based on what I already like.

I'm creating this thread to help people find out where they can go to find new music and also to satisfy my curiosity.

My basic question is this: how do you find your music? Do you independently seek it out or rely on the opinions of others?

Primarily what my friends listen to and the radio. However, some of my favorite music I found through youtube rabbit holes, or pandora. Seether's "Fake it" and Love and Theft's "Runaway" are two prime examples.

Sometimes I rummage around on OCRemix or Youtube. Friends tend to recommend a lot of music to me. Sometimes I hear something on the radio I want to explore. Or maybe a soundtrack that has some interesting tunes. When I hear something I like, I look it up.

Most of the music that I listen to have been the stuff like Rolling Stone that my dad play when I was a kid.
The rest is soundtracks from games and movies that I like, plus some symphonic metal that a girl showed me some years ago.

Two things:

Firstly, I cheat and work for a music magazine. So we get sent CDs for review and I listen to them before they go on sale

Secondly, Last.fm and Spotify. Sorted.

I have a external hard drive given to me by a friend, I don't remember how many gig's of music it has, I just know listening to all the songs on it would last for five days, It has all the music I need.

a good source are samplers. Lables give them away at shows and festivals or they are sold for little money. Then there are music magazines and even more important FanZines.

Pandora to a limited extent but primarily concerts. I've found most of my favorite bands by attending shows and paying attention to the opening acts. Dropping Daylight, When Heroes Die, and The Veer Union are all very cool guys and much more accessible (ie. they don't mind grabbing a beer and a game of pool or Apples to Apples with some fans) than Breaking Benjamin or Sick Puppies. I even got to go bowling with Senses Fail once after they opened for The Used.

Youtube and We7 mainly. However, a few times films have got me interested in new artists (Scott Pilgrim was responsible for my newfound love of Metric and Blood Red Shoes), sometimes I hear something I like on the radio and try to look up the artist, and sometimes I end up linked to new, good, stuff through this very forum (like getting into The Decemberists through being shown a video on here of The Mariner's Revenge Song...).

I play a game or I watch a movie or I simply listening to something on the radio. When I hear something I like I say to myself "hey! this is good sh-t. Then when I get the time I data-mine for the song "... I've collected thousands of songs this way. I also pay attention to the music that plays at a friend's house while I'm visiting & if I happen to like the song, i'll just ask him/her about it.

Just like Mr First up there, I use Last FM a lot, but I also still use my old method of happening across stuff by accident; I'll be in a store or watching a video on Newgrounds or Youtube, I'll hear a song and I'll try to track it down if I like it.

The radio is probably the worst place to get decent music for me, the general public have no clue whatsoever, these are the same people who like Justin Beiber and Mike Posner for crissakes.

Pandora - When I hear a band I like - I check them out on youtube.

Then all my music is bought from Amazon

A select few of my friends have good taste in music, and none of their suggestions have been bad, so I pretty much just listen to what they do. I'll go to YouTube once in a while when I desperately need some new music, though.

Mostly Youtube rabbit trails, and as others have mentioned, last.fm is an absolute godsend. One of my friends likes the same bands I do, and we usually recommend each other stuff as well.
