I read magazines, actual print and online, follow Youtube trails (rarely), and look at who a band thanks in their album liners or interviews. If you like Band A and they were influenced by Band B there's a good chance you'll like Band B too.

Last.fm, I check what it recommends based on my scrobbles. Works surprisingly well. Other than that I use Youtube to check for more songs by the same artist.

None of my friends listen to the same kind of music as me, so I don't have much choice in terms of recommendations.

Games.

I find a lot of my favorite bands via licensed game soundtracks.

Big thanks to Saint's Row 1, for introducing me to The Aquabats.

Internet forums. They're the best way of being exposed to different kinds of music. You can search for it independently but personally I also think looking at reviewer opinions are a good but not essential factor.

Pandora for me. I have come across so many artists I would have never encountered otherwise.

Thank you Pandora for introducing me to Wax Tailor.

I use the favorite artist FT. blank. And then investigate blank. Usually they are only good on the one track tho...

Internet exploration such as Youtube, last.fm, and of course /mu/ for the obscurities. And I do owe much of my music taste to a few friends that got me into some different genres.

I love how no one here will admit to using the top 40 lists. I mean, I don't, my particular, and at times peculiar (and at times not) taste in music is rarely represented there anyway, but I find it hard to believe no one who's happened across this thread takes any reference from it.
It must be the demographic. We're intelligent enough to avoid it. Spotify looks amazing; I'm downloading as I write. I agree that Last.fm is one of the best out there; we usually have it going when we have game nights.
About Scott Pilgrim: dangit, I forgot movies and games! It introduced me to Anamanaguchi as well.

Mostly friends and Youtube nowadays, but FurAffinity has found me a lot of excellent music in the past (turns out furries are naturally good at making techno I guess). I used to use Last.fm too, but I guess I just stopped using it for some reason ...

All sorts of places, usually last.fm or these "Youtube rabbit trails" you're referring to. Sometimes I find a band I like on last.fm, search for them on Youtube, and find another band I like.

I just get heavily vested into a music scene (ie, go to raves, concerts, etc.) You eventually just kind of become in tune with what's happening in the scene, the up and coming artists, stuff like that.
