AoE1 was about the Roman Empire, and it was pretty good all-around game, but it's main drawback was that you could only have 75 population. Every unit is one population.
AoE2 was about the Middle Ages, and is regarded widely as the best of the series. I do think it's really good, but I think AoE3 is better. Every unit is one population.
Age of Mythology is about the ancient/mythological Greek/Egyptian/Norse/Atlantian cultures. It has "god powers," which are one-time use powers that can tip the scale of a battle, and "myth units" such as the hydra, and the minotaur. Units are worth different pop depending on how powerful they are.
Age of Empires 3 is about the New World, and most of the archery that was involved in the last three games has given way to gunpowder. The Home City with its shipments are introduced. Units are worth different pop depending on how powerful they are.
