I think that AoE2 was the best of the games, but I also really enjoyed AoM and AoE3. I played Age of Mythology to death, but when the Titans expansion came out, it kind of killed it for me. The whole game became about who could release their Titan first. Once you did, it was game over.

Age of Empires III is a pretty close second to Age of Empires II for me. It introduced some good concepts that really worked (like the shipments, Home city, and the different factions were far more varied.) Also, it had ninjas AND pirates. Everything is better with pirates and ninjas.

The Age of Kings was easily my favourite, however I haven't played AoM. The game was and still is fantastic. The gameplay was nice and simple, you could build an army of some merit in virtually no time at all, though personally I used to prefer getting to the Imperial Age and building a massive army (yes, I killed about 90% of my civilian population to do so) and marching on any opposition still daft enough to be alive. Saying that though, I also really enjoyed making custom maps where techs. were cripplingly handicapped for a more "authentic" feel.

I may just have to reinstall it later.

AOM because in all the other games, civs have only a 1 or 2 unit difference from everyone else. In AOM there's only 3 civs but they're completely different.

Age of Empires II: Gold Edition is the only Age of Empires I've got, so it gets my vote.
Is Age of Empires III any good? I've been wanting it for some time now.
If you don't consider a sequel, it's a very good game. If you are expecting something extremely like AoE2, you will be disappointed.
It's been such a long time since I played Age of Empires II so I probably won't consider it a sequel.
I'm going to give it a shot, thanks for the feedback.

AoE 3, I've played (and own) all the games but that one always keeps me going because the units and civ's are varied enough to keep it fresh especially with the War Chiefs expansion as it adds the revoultion upgrade to the civ ages, so that sticks as the best in my mind with AoM falling in shortly behind it :)

Raah, hard choice. It's a throw-up between Age of Empires 2 (And the conquerer's expansion) or Age of Mythology. Both were fantastic; i'm gonna go for mythology purely based on god powers ;)

I have played every game in the series and I think the second is the best one because it was so simple, yet so much challenge in it.

age of mythology was actualy not an age of empires game, it was made by the same company yes but it doesnt count >.> that being said AoE2 age of kings and the conquerers expansion was the best of the series, it went down hill after that
Sure it counts. It was made by the same company, and originally had the title Age of Empires 3: Age of Mythology.

The Asian Dynasties adds even more civs and units.

2 because it is pretty similar to one except the fixed a lot of annoying stuff like not being able to make more than one unit at a time.

I personally prefer aoe2, aoe1 had the problem of not being able to Q enough units to build at once, so you had to expend more energy going back repeatedly (Old school C&C one unit building syndrome >_<). It gets brownie points because guns hadn't been introduced and medieval battles are bad ass.

I really hope that AoE4 doesn't go to world war 1/2, that would suck terribly.

That's hard to say. I can't decide between 2 and 3 because they were quite different games.

I loved 2 (with the Conquerors expansion). The story modes were really fun, the historical notes were fascinating, and there was just enough differentiation between the civilizations that they not only felt distinct, but I wound up preferring some over others (Spanish and Mongols forever, by the way). And that's in addition to being intuitive to play (once you activate the advanced controls) and fun.

I also loved 3 (with the War Chiefs and Asian Dynasties expansion). I wasn't as fond of the story (at least the first one, haven't played any of the others yet), and it took a bit to get used to the differences between it and the previous game, but I loved the sheer number of options available, especially with the addition of a customizable home city, bonuses for advancing age, and a resurrectable personal hero unit. Not to mention that the civilizations go beyond "distinct" very close to "unique" when compared to each other, and again, I have my preferences (Japanese, Sioux, and French for the win).

Granted, I've yet to play AoM...

I like all three AOE games, but I'll go with AOE 3 as my favourite.

It's a combination of reasons, really. It's more user friendly, and involves less micromanagement of villagers. The civs have more character with almost every unit being unique instead of just one or two. Things like explorers and home city shipments add a little more colour, and finally there's a better range of strategies available. (I swear in AOE 2 every single person just knight rushed)

I'd really love to play the first game again, since I was never good enough to finish it when I was young.

AoM probably, I'm a sucker for mythology though.

I like 'em all though, bring back the "walawoo" and "Iownyou" priests NAOW!
