Drums AND Bass... The rhythm and spine of any band. (I play drums btw)

I don't actually like "drum&bass" music but it goes to show that a whole genre of music has evolved out of the two 'unrespected' areas of rock/band music

At the end of the day, any great band doesn't rely on a stereotype member of the band to forward themselves. A GREAT 'band' is exactly that - a collection of musicians working collaboratively to create new, intuitive, interesting music

EDIT: experience: vocalists are the only stereotypes that live up to themselves most of the time....

Sadly, I doubt it is...

I am a big fan of Rush, but I've never heard that particular track.

Damn, Oh well

It's off their latest album and was apparently the result of Geddy fiddling around with a new bass and coming up with the riff then Neil getting in on the act and Alex coming late to the party. If you haven't already, definitely check it out.

I'm sad to be a bassist, I get no credit when we play gigs, we ARE expendable and taken for granted too much, even my own band members have said they've taken me for granted aswell. Everyone hates the bassist, the only exceptions I can think of are Mike dirnt, Steve harris and Les greenwood

Bassist. They do almost as much musical lifting as the drummer, but take twice the shit, because they "can't play". Bullshit. Go listen to Protest the Hero or Rush; then tell me if you think playing bass is easy.
I would agree with this, in my opinion, you could make a band with just a bass and drums, anything else is just extras.
If you ever come across one, please let me know.

Because that would be paragon. Yes, paragon. Look it up.

I've found more and more that I've really stopped listening to bands that don't have a skilled (or at least a mildly interesting) bass player. Check out Maps & Atlases, for example. i mean, they're ALL insanely talented, but it is nice to hear someone work a bass so hard.

"...a model of excellence or perfection of a kind; one having no equal; a perfect embodiment of a concept"

I was going to use epic but decided too many people use it anyway.

Oh crist......
I was in a band.
The drummer was retarted. Literally. He was retarted.
I was the guitarist. I didnt want to be in that freiking band, but I unfortunatly was.
The Bassist and the vocalist were the same person. He sucked, and he is totally expendable, but he thinks hes great. His voice sucked and he was super annoying, he thought he ran the band.

Unfortunatly, all steryotypes are true, even band ones.

Now if you excuse me, i'm going to eat a cheese and mayonase sandwich.

Drummer. Everyone acts like they are a dime a dozen. But they actually have a much bigger part than people give them credit. My uncle is a musician, and he has said that it is usually the drummer that keeps the pace for the rest of the band. Everyone is listening to the drummer to stay in rythem.
Yeah, anybody who's never been in a band acts like they're a dime a dozen. Seriously, drummers are hard to come by!
No, drummers are really easy to find.
Good drummers are hard to come by.

So what do you guys think about keyboard players?

So ha.

Also, Slash and Axel Rose from Guns n' Roses.
The White Stripes beg to differ. Just saying.

What about guitarists that aren't in a band? If I'm a good example, we're all insecure and kind of wish that we could find some friends that are willing to play bass or drums so that this band thing we've been talking about for years can finally get going.

Bassists never get any love. Maybe I'm a bit limited, but I've only ever seen Metallica give enough love to their bassist, especially when Cliff Burton was around.

EDIT: Well, they have been kind to Trujillo. He gets a lot more attention than bassists usually get.

Maybe the bass stereotype, the bassists I know deffinitely aren't quiet, nor are they expendable for the type of music I like to play. But then I'm inclined to say the drummer stereotype aswell, because I play the drums, and a few other instruments, and I'm fairly good with all of them.

john paul jones was the bassist for led zep, he's a multi-instrumentalist, arranged the strings on automatic for the people and all the strings on led zep albums.
paul mccartney was the bassist for the beatles, that's really all that needs saying
john entwistle was the bassist for the who and was brilliant
flea form RHCP plays many instruments
the bassist from queen wrote some of their biggest hits
Bootsy Collins was the main bassist for Parliament-funkadelic and wrote their best song- Flashlight (a stone cold classic, by the way)
james jameson was the bassist of the funk brothers (the motown band) and formed the basis for the best motown songs.

so, a lot of bassists are just as brilliant as their bandmates and deserve due recognition

Well, they're no good anyway.
And I don't care what they think.
