I can only base this on aesthetics, but I think the Fiesta or the Accent are the two best looking ones.

Definitely the Fiesta, from the list you chose.

But optimally, without the 2012 constraint, buying a new econobox is nigh on the worst decision possible.

If you're looking for fuel-efficient and compact, I've got to say Golf...

Of this list, I guess the Ford or the Honda?

Well, I've had 4 cars in my lifetime....

A Mitsubishi Lancer... Not on the list, not talking about...

A Hyundai Excel... It was alright~ish... Drove fine, handling was great (without power steering) and had a general nice 'feel' to it... (I know it's not what you're looking at, but Hyundai have REALLY picked up their game in recent years, and since mine was a '96 model, they must be better than good now)

A Holden (Chevrolet) Astra... one of the earlier models ~mid 2000's~ Not sure if Australia builds the Astra here, but, seriously, was one of the most horrible things I've owned... was a complete mistake buying it... Broke down often, it chewed through tyres... No amount of money could fix it's problems... worst mistake EVARRR

And a Honda Civic... Again, not on the list (although not sure what "size" they come in, they are certainly not "big" cars... Again, was a great little thing, until a 4wd cleaned me up and got it written off... bastard... I'm a big fan of hatches... mainly because you can fit a sub in the back and make the doof doofs without it being muffled through the back-seats...

So, if this helps, great... if not, I'm putting the vote on the Honda... most reliable car I've owned, so, yeah... They'll probably get more of my money in the future... The whole Jap tuner pedigree helps too... lol

I chose the yaris because its the only one i can stand (friend has one), and even then id much rather go slightly older and go for sumat like a magane, clio, 207, golf, civic etc.

And i wouldn't believe all the hype about diesel if your thinking about going for diesel, i recently switched from a 1.4L 8v petrol to a 2L turbo diesel and there isn't much difference in fuel economy, the petrol got 44mpg and the diesel is getting 51mpg, not really worth the insurance hike i took for the mpg but totally worth it for when the turbo kicks in... =D

All those cars are awful just get a Vauxhall Nova. The ultimate Chav car. I want a Nova and it's not an unrealistic target.

I personally couldn't suggest any of those, mainly because I detest new cars, as they all look the same and you can't do shit to fix em yourself, which means once the warrantee is off they pretty well expect you to buy a new one... Newest vehicle I have owned is a 1988 mazda b2200 pickup, with basic maintenance, it's at 360,000kms and still runs fine. Also if I do need to replace anything in/on it, it's an insanely common vehicle, there's parts for em everywhere, and it's pretty good on gas, hell if you could get one of those second hand, they're a small truck, so they're about car height, and about the size of an old civic hatchback plus a foot or so. However if you can find a toyota pickup from the mid 1980s, those things are practically unkillable, hell even top gear did an experiment and even after driving it into a tree, a building, through a shed, dropped a caravan on it, lit it on fire, drowned it in the second fastest rising tide on earth, and exploded an apartment complex under it, it still ran, with only a few minor tweaks done with a set of basic tools(wrenches and a hammer and a screw driver I believe)... hell I mighta even missed some of the stuff they did to it. Still, they don't make 'em like they used to.

Maybe you should get a good reliable German vehicle... like a panzer...

OT: Ford Fiesta, my family is saturated with them and they haven't gone wrong in thirty-plus years, in their various incarnations, so I'm inclined to go for that.

Get an old mini, no road tax (in the UK at least) good MPG and you can freak people out by having 7 people and a dog all pile out. Since it's surprisingly roomy inside.

None of those. Get one of these instead!

If not, I'm not going to be much use as I know little about the actual poll options.

I love these things, a chap up the road has a 1300 engine in his, stripped out, with a roll cage, fat little tyres and a straight cut gearbox. It's an absolute blast.

I have a big hefty Legacy, which is nice in its own way.

I got a Chevrolet Matiz and it runs like a dream (A somewhat slow dream though) and I havent had a lot of problems with it besides the generator breaking down after some 4-5 years.

Its pleasent to drive, the seats are higher up than you'd expect so you step into the carseat mostly instead of feeling like you're sitting 5 inches off the pavement, its also rather fueal effecient and somewhat roomy. (Not the largest trunk though)

If thats not an option then i recommend the Hyndai Accent, I had that car before the Matiz and it served me well... till some nutcase decided to plow into it sending me to the hospital.

This and anything less is simply inferior and if anyone tells you otherwise make sure to remind them that you deserve it.

Personally I like to keep as much money as local as possible, So for me that precludes most of the options, and really have never had a good time with a ford, so , Yeah, Sonic? Ok, yeah I could do that.

Lucky you, I had to buy my car, 52 hyundai accent, £500 :)

EDIT: Also, to actually offer some help, don't buy a new car, you can get a used car that has done 20 miles for a few grand less, as it has no VAT. That means for the same price you can get a better car :)

Because someone's paying for it, and you can help them pay less by getting a used car. Maybe they'd like to put the leftover money away? You know, unless you hate the person buying the car for you. In which case, you should get the most expensive car, and then flip them off as you drive away. Might I suggest a Ferrari?
As I mentioned in the OP, the person is paying for it as party of estate planning. She doesn't need to put the leftover money away because she's 88 years old and has more than enough money to live out another 20 years comfortably. This is part of a tax dodge so her estate isn't taxed as heavily. I wouldn't get anything crazy because I wouldn't be able to afford the upkeep and insurance, also my cousins would kill me.

I think there are fairly large differences in the U.S. We notably have a sale's tax instead of a VAT, and even last year's car with ~400 miles goes for about the same price.

Ah, well fair enough. If they are going for the same price then yeah you might as well get a new car. I voted for the yaris. I do love my accent however it has a pretty slow 0-60, so I think a yaris would get the same mileage and be quicker :)

I have also heard good things about them :)
