Just a hypothetical question: you've just got a game you've never played before, and are starting it for the first time. When given the option, which difficulty would you select?

For the sake of argument, we'll say that you have access to the manual and/or a tutorial. Whether or not you used them is up to you. :)

It depends on the genre, as well as how I'm feeling at the time. For a genre I'm not very good at, like racing, probably easy-normal. For an RPG, probably normal-hard.

I often start on easy or normal then work my way up.

I like games like Oblivion that actually have sliders for this. Sometimes it seems their is only a hairsbreadth`s difference between "too damn easy" and "I should be getting payed for having to put up with this".

I still recall in Morrowind those damned skeletal archers early in the game pissing me off so bad that I edited them out of the game. Now that's difficulty control =).

Normal or a notch below. It depends on the game then I kick it up after that.

Normal to Hard the first run through, then if I liked the game enough, I start over on the hardest difficulty.

Medium-Hard usually, it depends on the game. After my first playthrough sometimes I'll go back and play on the hardest difficulty.

I start on Normal and then play with it from there. If it gets frustratingly difficult, I will adjust the difficulty but that normally means that I've played that same level/area/mission for quite a while and simply haven't figured it out. If it feels like I'm plowing through enemies the way oil pours through BP's fingers, I'll up the difficulty.

Normal, because I don't like getting my ass kicked, but I don't want to have a free ride or else it's boring.

I always like choosing the hardest difficulty the game offers. It helps me get better at the game sooner. And a good challenge is always fun.
