Let's completely drive over the op's question and say:

I like GOOD rpg's.

I don't automatically give a pass to a bad game, nor do I thumb my nose at a good game, simply because of where it's from.

I've enjoyed games from both JRPG and WRPG camps, that were good. And I'll probably continue to do so.
ACH! You ninja! You took the words right out of my mouth.

OT: I like the good games from both of them. I have played bad JRPG's and bad WRPG. Both have good and bad games, I try to only play the good ones.

western... i just cant relate to or tolerate the weirdness of japanese games in general, not just the RPGs.

i just wish that more WRPGs would be given the same amount of attention into making a great story AND great gameplay.

Just can't stand turn based combat. I am simply unable to play through a JRPG because of this. If you feel like you want to change my opinion please recommend a JRPG without or with a very different turn based combat. I would be happy to try it.

Meh, I just like good RPGs.
Though I suppose I still have a weak spot for JRPGs.

I think the main reason for this is that I have yet to play a WRPG that actually wows me in the story/characterization department. The Mass Effect series was a good start to change that - but that's all what it was, a start.

To me, personally, characters like Yuri Volte Hyuga, Vivi Ornitier, Freya Crescent and Kanji Tatsumi are a lot more appealing that the shallow characters in Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, Wizardry or Fallout.

Also, I find stories the like of Persona 3 and Chrono Trigger to be much more engaging than most WRPGs.

I have to say that the JRPG genre has never appealed to me in the slightest. When I have given them a go, I tend to find the characters rather bland and predictable and the world rather boring.
In no way am I saying that WRPGs avoid any or all of these problems, but generally I find that I encounter them less, and can tolerate them to a much higher degree.
I also feel that WRPGs say to me "Here is your character, mould them as you wish." Yet when I played JRPGs they felt much narrower in that regard, suggesting that I should be the one to mould myself into the character, rather then moulding them around myself.

Like most things really, it ultimately boils down to personal preference.

Oh my god thank you for saying that. I'm so tired of Escapists spouting off that JRPGs aren't real RPGs and thus must be hated on principle. So many people seem to believe that playing purely for gameplay instead of an experience is the only correct way to do games. People have gotten into this zone of thinking wherein any game is automatically made worse if it loses interactivity in cut scenes as if they're afraid the pure bred master race of games is mixing with those dirty movie types. Are we still so obsessed with labels that we can't let a definition evolve a little without freaking out?

"JRPG" is just a genre. It tells you the type of game, what to expect. We all understand how definitions change over time and we all get what a JRPG is, so who the fuck cares if it's not a technically accurate description, that doesn't change the experience. JRPGs don't follow the traditional sense of the RPG, but then neither do most modern WRPGs. Most JRPGs generally have little to no character customization, and people seem to misunderstand that such a feature is not something you'd generally find in a JRPG. Complaining that JRPGs don't let you build your own character is like saying an FPS doesn't let you build your own character. It just doesn't make sense to complain about a feature that isn't synonymous with the genre in the first place. And all this apparently because of some misconception of what the "RPG" is supposed to mean that people can't get past.

OT: I've got favorites from both, though I'd probably lean towards JRPG because of Persona 4 and FFIX. I don't think either genre (especially JRPG) has made anything fantastic in years... minus The Witcher 2, which is fantastic x10.

I prefer JRPG, though they both have parts I like and hate.

I find that I just wander and lose motivation to keep playing in WRPGs, especially since they have bad stories for the most part.

JRPG's are rpgs that let's you role play a certain character they made and focuses more on that character's personality/depth.

WRPG's are rpgs that let's you role play a certain character they made and focuses more on what you make those characters do.

so if you want something that has story depth. Go with JRPG's or just read a novel
but if you want something that makes you be what you want. Go with WRPG's or just play pretend with your friends.

in my opinion though

I suppose currently WRPG's by default, as I haven't played any JRPG's (unless those Pokemon gameboy colour games from my childhood count as such).

Any JRPG would be very hard pressed to top my appreciation for the Elder Scrolls series though. Its story might be mediocre at best, but the freeroam gameplay and customizability more than makes up for that. If I want unmatched story quality I'll go with visual novels rather than RPG's anyway.

Agree 100%. Until recently Bioware were the creme de la creme of WRPGs and i enjoyed every one of them, but i've also loved the FF series, the Star Ocean series (except last hope *spit*), Grandia and many others.

Stylistically they are different but both can be highly enjoyable
