The Ultramarines were... um... boring. Gulliman came up with the Codex Astartes... But the AWESOME armies don't follow it... (see Dark Angels and Black Templars).
Each Legion had its strengths and weaknesses. Ultramarines were the most stable... but had nothing AWESOME.
For the Emperor!
Before the Heresy, The Emperor's Children were his favoured Legion, hence why they had his heraldry. The Luna Wolves/Sons of Horace had the most impressive list of conquests. The Imperial Fists (I love you Dorn) were considered the best at defensive siege warfare. Night Lords excelled at terror tactics. White Scars at swift surgical strikes. Alpha Legion at misdirection and infiltration... I could go on...Christemo said:

I'd have to say an officer in the Sith Navy from KOTOR, simply because I'd get to help raze entire planets, and those ships look simply badass. Nevermind that I could be force choked for insubordination/failure or because my commanding Dark Jedi was simply bored.

The Elyssian Drop Troops. Las carbines? Check. Grav chutes and air deployment? Check. Carapace armour? Check, Emperor damnit, check. All I have to do is drop down as far away from the commisar as possible and hug cover. Best armour available to mere mortals and none of the encumerance of a full rifle? I think I should be able to survive a few battles.
From the list? Well given that being a spartan means being taken at the age of 6, trained like a dog and, let's not forget, the supression of the sex drive, I'd be a bit shit out of war, what what's military life without shore leave? So I guess I'd go for the SOLDIERs. Something about the strength and ability to dress like a woman but still look OK seems fairly appealing, and if I can choose my sword...

Fair point, But the gaurds are still epically cool, there still real people whereas the space marines are more machine than man.
