8 is the one most similar to 7 but its radical changes to the battle system alienated many.

I would always recommend 6. You like 'hand-made, detailed backgrounds' you say? 6's backgrounds and enemy sprites look painted, with my particular favorite being the forest background.

I'd recommend 6. However if you're going to play 8, I have to warn you about the tremendous dick move around the 3rd disk. All I will tell you is that you'll be rushing off to save the damsel in distress and you'll end up in a kind of tower, don't save in that tower or if you do use a different save slot!!

All 3... However start with six as it is EPIC, great music, great story and fun cast.

That said I really like 8 with its themes and areas...

6 or 9 I'd say but then I never played 8 =P

Although seeing as you enjoyed 7 maybe you wouldn't like 9 (I love it btw), as I've noticed that people who love 7 usually despise 9 - just a personal observation, I may be wrong.
I've played 7 before 9 and I found 9 to be more enjoyable personally. I love both games, but 9 just seemed to leave a bigger impact on me.

Well, I'd rate them in order of awesome

1. Final Fantasy VI
2. Final Fantasy IX
3. Final fantasy VIII

They're all good, but if I had to choose one to play, I'd edge VI over IX. It's a little less whimsical, and the music is snestastic!

I'd say go through 8 first. It's one of my favorite and since I'm one of the minority who count it as one of the best ones, I'd say go ahead and get through it. If you like grinding then take as much time as you need (a few hours) at the very first beach. Draw blizzard magic from the red fish things and, have Shiva and Quetzalcoatl learn all of their abilities and it'll turn you into a demi-god before you hit boss battle number 1.

This.

OT:FF 6 is by far my favorite FF game , unless you count tactics ( the original ps1 version) . Iv'e played them all , loved them all ( even 13 wanna fight about it?) and 6 is really good . If your going to talk about graphics , i got nothing more to say to you .

You know, it's strange thing. I've got a friend whose eyes physical gunk up if she plays any game with worse graphics than Final Fantasy X. It's very sad.

Ah, you see, when I wrote "people who loved 7" I actually meant "rabid FF7 fanbois". I was trying to be tactful =P Although who knows? Maybe there are some of them who liked 9; stranger things have happened. I think. Have pigs learnt to fly yet?

Seeing as I never did get past disc 1 of FF7 - did I just invalidate my opinion? Eh feck it - I wholeheartedly agree with you on FF9 resonating more with me. A big part of that is probably that 7 had this whole dreary emo vibe to it. Even though 9 had some emo characters too it just never FELT emo to me. Also Zidane > Cloud in my book.

I wouldn't recommend Final Fantasy 8 if you liked 7. I have rants about FF8 that are becoming legendary around here, but I won't mess about with that and just say that I think 6 and 9 are the better choices.

While I kind of disagree about the whole emo thing, I respect your opinion.

And I respect yours. After all, I never finished 7 so I should probably just shut up.

IX is my favorite in the entire series, so I'll have to recommend that one.

Ignore the VIII apologists who come out of the woodwork every time a Final Fantasy thread pops up. That game is not worth it.

To be honest any 3 of those are great games, in different ways.
If you want story, characters, and combat then 6.
If you want something new, very good combat, interesting designs, but lame overall story then 8.
9 Is hard to say anything bad about really.

I'd also personally recommend 4 the complete edition on psp. Comes with 4, interlude, and the after years :D

Eight is my favourite game of all time, so naturally I'll recommend that!
If I gave reasons this'd become a TL;DR, so I won't.

But if you liked 7's style you may not like 6 as much, the older generation Final Fantasies were a lot different. More medieval-styled. Not saying you won't like it if you like 7, definitely give it a go, it's just different. I personally don't like it though. Although, Kefka is a badass.
6 is medieval/steampunk with a fairly straightforward story, 8 is more post-modern with a big plot twist, 9 is steampunk with an even bigger plot twist. Hopefully that'll help.

EDIT: Just adding in to not listen to people who say 8's story sucks, it's down to opinions. I personally loved the hell out of the story, others'll say differently. Best to play it and judge for yourself.

Ok, I'm about midway through my second play through of final fantasy 7, and, to my surprise, it's just as awesome as I remembered it. I've got final fantasy fever now, and I want more, but I'm not sure which one to play first, so I'd love some help.

I intend to play this on my PSP (or possibly PS3), so we're limited to the games available for download as PS1 Classics. I don't have any other systems.

Just to tell you some of my preferences, I love 7, I remember liking 10, and I hated 13.

Also, I am not really leaning toward FF 6 because of the graphics. I really like all the hand-made, detailed 2.5d backgrounds in FF7. I'd like to see more of them, and I'm assuming that 6 isn't going to have that since it was originally for the SNES. But if you think 6 is so much better than 8 and 9 in story and game play that it can overcome the graphics, then you should go ahead and vote for it.

Edit: Christ now I see why everyone complains about the polls.
Ok, if the SNES graphics really bothers you, go try FF9. A good game, nice characters and a nice story (I don't know why but I find it really similar to FF6's story).

But I cannot urge you enough, do yourself a favor and try FF6. One of the best JRPG game/story ever made :)

Ff9 if you can stand the art style.

It's one of the best titles in the ff series yet is is most overlooked and underappreciated of the post ff6 titles.
