Never really saw what people loved so much about VI.
IX however is a truly exceptional game. It has one of the most phenomenal stories I've ever seen. Not to mention some of my favorite characters ever.

Well as a fellow who owns every Final Fantasy game minus the online ones and the spin offs... I'd recommend 9 out of them. Personal favourite is and always will be 7 for three reasons, one is mainly nostalgia, I'll admit that one, was the first I played and I do have quite the bias towards it (got it for my 7th birthday), arguably the best most memorable score in the series and the storyline is pretty good... I know a lot of haters will hate on it but I did like the storyline, even coming back to it after years of playing it, I still enjoyed the story and the fact that Cloud isn't as much as a whiner that he gets heat for... also most if not all the characters have an arc (which is important).

However you've already played 7 so I'll go on to my second favourite in the series which is indeed 9. Its a good change of pace from 7 and as many will say here, the games aesthetic is closer to that of the original final fantasies. Also, I liked the main character.

The worst out the three you mentioned would go to 8. Its not a bad game but its certainly the worse out of the three mentioned. Don't let that put you off though, currently in an FF mood and I'm replaying this one as we speak :). The one thing I will note which is really out of the spirit of final fantasy is the level scaling, you'll actually want to avoid leveling up as it makes the game harder. Makes the game less grind tastic but Final Fantasy is always been a grind fest and that's why I love the series (aside from the fact that every and I do mean every Final Fantasy is scored to perfection).

Now if you're going to play all three at some point, I'd suggest working upward. Maybe go from 8-9-6? Get better and better till you reach six. (9 and 6 are interchangable in my opinion, but in most, it'd probably be 6 last)

By that I mean, save the best for last, climb them in order of how good they are.

If not, IX or VI, both are great. I almost feel sorta iffy on VIII, it just didn't sit well with me for whatever reason.

I'm pretty sure you can get the full series all the way up to XI on the PSP/PS3 So if our O.P had the money, he could go from getting the first and working his way up to XI. Which I recommend doing as you get to see how the series evolved over time, the different directions it goes in and also experience each story and how each story is told. I actually went out of my way to buy as PS2 and get the X/X-2 and XII so I could experience the climb up to XIII and will probably be getting XIII 2 and Versus XIII :).

I know people get on at FF but I've always been a big fan at heart and honestly even the bad FF's are still pretty good games.

Hey, guys who follow me, can you guess what my answer is going to be?

Final Fantasy IX. It's my favorite along with V. You should try both if you get the chance.

Well, I have only played 6 and 8, so I can't comment on 9. But I will say, while I really liked 8, I liked 6 much more. 6 is one of my favorite games of all time, certainly one of my favorite SNES RPGs of all time. So, I say go with that one. You won't regret it. If you like JRPGs, you will love 6. Trust me.

8 first. Get it out of the way. Not fond of it. However it is the one that is the most similar to 7 in my view. Id go for 9 next. Its good especially if you adored the original. Doing it that way also has the advantage of doing them in sequence, so you get a better feel for the evolution of the franchise.

Save FF3 Snes for last as It is arguably the best of the entire franchise. (Really only other contender is 7)

Honestly, it's a travesty that you haven't played IX. VII and VI are good, but they can wait. IX is easily the best of that group, and you should get on it right away.
Use Freya.

I played 9 after 7 and 8 and I have to say it was kind of disappointing. I liked 8 more than 6 but I guess you should start with 6 since that's where the good stuff started. Leave 9 for last. I'm basing this on your likes and dislikes which are the same as mine so I'm guessing you'll enjoy 8 and 6 more than 9 like I did. Yes 13 is just wrong and 10 is pretty decent. I dunno....9 felt silly. I've always had an odd feeling when I played that one. Don't tell anyone which one you chose cuz there're a lot of summernerds that can get pretty aggressive when someone chooses something over what they love.

8 is very hit and miss so tread with caution it probably has one of the weirdest fucked up stories out there. Also no I do subscribe to the dream theory.

6 and 9 are good but I find then to be the most over rated Final Fantasies next to 7. To be honest at this moment in time on the internet probably even more than 7 in my opinion anyway as you always hear people going on about how they prefer them over 7 on every single FF thread.

They are both fine to play but beware they are quite hyped up.

FFVI is my favourite FF, but like someone said above if the old SNES graphics bother you're better off playing IX first and waiting to see if Square comes out with a revamped FFVI somewhere down the line, like they've done with the other previous games.

Yeah, but Spoony didn't like Final Fantasy IX either, so his opinion is moot anyway.

I personally would go for IX first, despite VIII being my favourite.

VI is rather so so to me, and I much prefer V, and IV over it, dunno why though.

I recommend 6, then 8, then 9.

6 is the greatest of their 16bit creations which respect to story, visuals, and gameplay
8 is great in that the story is more character driven, plus the junction system was cool to tweak around with.
9 was okay, it was more of a "throw back" to older style - but I didn't care for any of the characters or the final boss.

If you don't mind teenage angst and an inception like plot then go with 8. I like the game play on this one just because you're forced to play with the other characters and not just level up the main dood and blaze through everything. I do find the drain system a bit tedious/exploitable, but the game is good over all.

I enjoyed 9's graphic a lot more because like FF8 and legend of dragoon the realistic graphics looks off. Plus the story is really good and combat system is solid and Zidane is probably one of the best main characters in the series.

I loved 8. It ranked as my favorite FF game until 12 came around. It's the story and the characters that got me and they got to me in a way I couldn't describe until the ending. I wont spoil it for you but I will say that was the first video game I played where I felt my heart sink for a few minutes in despair then leap for joy. Hell of an ending.

To be fair, Spoony didn't play much of IX and I can't remember him outright stating the game was bad or awful, just that he couldn't get past the character design.
