I vote six. It was the pinnacle of the series, and fie on your graphical snobbery.

Just... if you do enjoy seven so much, play eight and nine at some point. I'm not one to hate on 'em. They were each worth playing once, at least.

Definitely skip on the 8th installment. It's so stupid it insults my brains.
Yeah, it's nice to look at but the characters are so token and unlikeable and the twist is the second-dumbest thing I've ever heard. I'd spoiler it but your IQ might drop instantly by 20 points.

The 9th game is quite nice but to my shame I've never went all the way through. 'twas fun while it lasted.

Go for the 6th. Yeah, hand-drawn pixel sprites might not be the current gen graphics you're used to but the random encounters come and go faster than ever, the battles are even fun with loads of varied skills, EACH character has a great and/or fun story arc (well... okay, one exception) and the bad guy wins. By far, the best FF there is (story-wise of course, but honestly, why else would you go through a J-RPG anyway? Not for the breath-takingly, adrenaline-inducing turn-based combat, right?)

6: low graphics but excellent story and a strong cast of characters. Gameplay wise, it might be hard to go backwards to when movement was still restricted to invisible grids but you eventually get used to it and, hey, who doesn't love Kefka?

8: high graphics (the start of great quality for Squeenix imo) but I found the characters in 8 had less depth to them than some of the other games. That, or they just weren't as memorable. Weapons upgrade system is a little boring but the card games are fun. I would mention the 4 disc problem but since you'll be PSPing it...

9: ... iiinteresting character designs, good graphics, tons of fun mini-games and strong characters. Being honest, I can't remember anything particularly awful about 9 but nothing exceptionally awesome either.

Honestly, it's all about what you want. I'd say start on 6 and work your way up since it sounds like this fever might go on for a while and it's always easier to progress with gaming technology than go backwards, but that's just me. I know if I had to replay one right now, I'd pick between 6 and 9 while leaning towards 9.

If I were to judge, I'd say that everyone who says 8 are trolls trying to fuck up your investment. But then again, I'm not a FF guy (I like Chrono series MUCH better).
I played 7, 8 and 9. I've heard opinions that 6 is better than 7 but IDK - never got myself a copy (or emulator for that matter), but I had better time getting through 9 than 7 (term "Fantasy" was more in place there, + I really liked the class system), not to say 7 is bad, but It hit me in more right spots. Whereas 8 was PAIN from start to my end at 3rd cd on ps1 - could not take any more of drawing magic and assigning it to attributes. If Your interested in it still, check Spoonys video review at his website - around 4h of epic lols.

Nine is my personal favorite, but six is also fantastic. While "best Final Fantasy" is a highly debated thing, I consider them to be the best in the series. They're the pinnacle rpgs of their console generations. Eight is still enjoyable, but I'd save it for last out of the three.

I don't think there's any concern about graphics when playing six. Good SNES graphics are very timeless. It seems way more common for the blocky 3d of FFVII to look really dated to people (myself included), so if you still enjoyed that I doubt you'll mind the look of six.

Thanks for all your input everybody. I think I have been convinced to try 6 next. I have kind of always wanted to see the famous opera aria scene, so I might as well do it. I'll probably do 9 after that. My younger brother swears by 8, so I'm definitely going to give it a go at some point. So I guess I'll add those to my ever expanding backlog.

Well it's said that people who like 8 don't like 9 and vice versa.

I gave 9 a chance recently and i got midway through the second disk and i was like this is boring... plus it doesn't help that my brother took the psp memory card i was playing it on.

Derp edit, I say 8. 6 was also pretty good, lotsa AP grindage but what FF game doesn't have that is the real question... But how the shit are you getting 6 from the psn?

Rekabdarb, you make a VERY good point. I just realized it isn't on the PSN. There's a bunch of articles saying it's going to be, including wikipedia, but it isn't actually on there.

Don't I feel silly.

I voted for 8. It is the one I have found to have the most replay value (for whatever reason). I still have random impulses to play it to this day. It was unique I will give it that.

IX is pretty meh, I only played through about halfway before I got bored. It's really only good if you were a big fan of all the old old FFs, and since it sounds like you aren't, I woudn't recommend it.

VIII has plenty of fans as you can tell from this very thread, but I'm pretty sure it's generally considered the worst FF. I haven't played it personally, but that's because I've heard so much more bad than good. Play at your own risk.

VI is all sprite graphics, nothing hand-drawn or 3D, so if that's really a turn-off then I guess it's not for you, but it has an excellent plot, characters, settings, and fun character-building/battles. It gets way too easy at the end, though, but then most FFs have that problem unless you're going after superbosses. I recommend VI for sure.

Old hands are going to suggest 6. People my age (nearing 30) are going to attest the superiority of the best Final Fantasy to hit the Super Nintendo, usurping all its predecessors in story and execution. FF7 is a personal fave of mine, and I'm glad you're pleased with it. :) FF6 is a VERY close second. It's a different experience though.

FF8 is going to treat you wrong if you want more FF7 experience. FF8 is good in select senses. While FF7 got spearheaded 3D environments, and a few other things the series kept for many games after, FF8 led the charge in graphical fidelity. But the combat mechanics- and you will be in combat a lot, leave a lot to be desired. So, be warned, the story and plot of FF8 is good, but the gameplay is not. (Q: Why? A: Draw System.)

I cannot say anything about FF9 because I never played. I hear great things though. :)

FF6 was offered as a PS1 port, and wiki may say it's on the PSN because that port may be offered in other regions on their PSN Network. I never looked cause I still have the SNES cart, the PS1 disk, and a few other itterations. :3

VI is the best in the series by a long shot. The villain is the best, the characters are all memorable and well fleshed out, the story is superb (I didn't cry at VII, but there was one scene in VI that made me cry a bit), the mechanics are all well executed, the music is fantastic, and it is one of the best-looking SNES games. And even as a WRPG fan, I still love VI

Also, it's one of the few JRPGs that Yahtzee likes, so if you agree with what he says (and even if you don't), you'd be doing a disservice to yourself not checking it out. Also, it is coming out on PSN, but it isn't out at the moment. I'm pretty sure you can get it on the Wii though, or if all else fails, just download the SNES ROM

Good luck hun. :) FF games take forever to complete unless you lack a life. You'll be at this for years if you played at my rate. :)

XIII or XIV are generally considered the worst. VIII is kind of like X: it has a large following, but overall, there's a mixed opinion about it amongst the fanbase. It's definitely not the best, but it's also not the worst

Edit 2: Despite what wikipedia says, it appears that FF 6 is not on the PSN. I'm derpalicious.
I remember seeing V on the PSN and I think VI was there also but, I'm living in Australia which means I use the European PSN and VI might only be on the European PSN. According to Wikipedia, it's only on PSN in Japan and PAL regions. (if you go to the release date and click on show, it will show the PSN release date and territories where the US isn't listed on the PSN release.) Oh well, they're making up for never releasing the SNES version in PAL territories.

And go for VIII. Absolutely loved it, although I went from playing X (loved it) as my first than VIII (although I had technically played a little bit of VIII years before but I forgot about it).
Dunno what I would have thought it if I played VII first.

Although like you, I found XIII really disappointing.

In all honesty, whichever one you play next ought to be a lot of fun. I'm one of those rabid FFVII fangirls, and I loved all three. I think my favourite period in the series is probably IV to IX.

I'd say start with VI. Don't let the old sprites and top down graphics put you off, it's still one of the best games I've played. Plus it has Ultros in it, so no further explanation is needed here.

IX is also brilliant, a bit more lighthearted than the preceeding games and the art direction is lush. VIII is one that tends to polarise people - I liked it, but there were one or two things in it (mainly the Draw system) that I could quite cheerfully have kicked into next week. Doesn't stop it being fun overall though. :)

I've played FF4, 5 6 and Mystic quest. FF4 would probably seem way too dated unless you get used to playing FF6. FF5 was quite tedious for me. FF6 looks very good for a Snes game, and the story is unforgettable, so I'd recommend that.
