i heard the escapist has a thing against vs. threads, but this one I'm really puzzled about. I was thinking about both games, and I really cant come up with an answer. I know I can't keep fanboys of either game out of the thread, but it would be nice to support your opinion. And for those of you who are more modern game players and don't know of Goldeneye, please don't just say Halo. And I am talking more in terms of console gameplay and not story, though setting can count.

P.S.
Im not trying to start arguments or anything here. I am actually am puzzled.

Goldeneye.

However, Halo DID have innovations. It's just that all the innovations were boring and counter-productive and started the chain of boring, brown FPS's.

I had plenty of fun with Goldeneye as a kid. It was one of the first ones that got me interested in the FPS genre. I mean, playing as a completely badass secret agent that can drive a tank? It was the most fun I ever had

Halo has its moments, indeed, but I found myself having anger issues unlike with Goldeneye. Halo had a good story - if one could follow it, and had great scenery, but I just didn't find that it gave me the satisfying taste Goldeneye did.

So I would choose Goldeneye.

Goldeneye set the standard for console-based FPS's. Halo merely expanded on the same grounds into the latest (at the time) console generation.

a shooter that was made on a system not meant for shooters or a game that was different and fun and was innovative in it's own right, it... it just isn't a real fair comparison, this is almost apples and oranges, Halo was a shooter that pretty much saved the xbox. Golden Eye is one of the first Great Console shooters.
With this comparison I'd have to go with Golden Eye.

I'll go with Goldeneye.
It featured a massive amount of weaponry and cheats for its time.
Unlocking 007 mode actually let you fiddle with the mission stats, which lead to some interesting times.
Also a wide variety of missions, all the important ones from the movie.
It WAS however a dinosaur of the old style of aiming and moving rather than the dual stick movement FPS use now.

EDIT: I also had amounts of fun playing multiplayer that should be illegal.

Being a PC gamer, I was surprised to find out how many things Goldeneye did first. I know it's the first game to have a sniper rifle and I think it was the first to do escort missions.

Halo was really influential, but there really wasn't much of anything it did first.

Goldeneye wins.

Let's not forget the fact that Half Life was released BEFORE Halo. So Halo's innovations pale in comparison.

HALO! *fanboy rages*

That was called "sarcasm," children.

Goldeneye. I have very fond memories of playing that game.

Tho, i will give Halo credit. It started a trend of really lame FPSs, culminating in Cock of Doody: Modern Gay Fuck Stupid 2.

Goldeneye, it's miles ahead of Halo in every way. I still play it to this day and play the multiplayer with friends every so often, haven't in awhile but we'll be hopefully making a day out of it soon.

Seriously, you can't beat it, there'll never be another groundbreaking game like that EVER again. The amount of features it brought to the table is ridiculous.

In terms of gameplay, Goldeneye. It MADE multiplayer FPS games. It's the template Halo was made from, along with a thousand other games. Can't get much more original than that.

In terms of story: Well, Halo was it's own story, Goldeneye was based on a movie, but despite it being a damn good movie, Halo wins.

Well obviously Goldeneye.

It was the first modern FPS and practically invented the modern multiplayer. It set the foundations for all other shooters since.

Halo brought online CONSOLE gaming into popularity however it did nothing of the "it created online gaming" claim that people spout, games like counterstrike set that bar years before. If Halo hadn't coem along then another game would have and done the same thing. If Goldeneye and it's groundbreaking dev team had not made their game then we would have been stuck in the 'Doom' mindeset for a long time (see duke nukem 3D)

Halo basically took the originality of Goldeneye, added the innovations that counterstrike and other online PC shooters brought to the table and made a very profitable series.

Yes Halo made online gaming popular for consoles but in terms of being original...sorry but it's basically Starship Troopers for kids.

Goldeneye - it didn't 'innovate' on the whole (everything it did PC games did first), but it changed the map as far as console FPS games went, making games like halo ultimately possible. It's also one of the few film licensed games which is awesome - an innovation which unfortunately never caught on.

Giving all credit to Halo where it is due, Goldeneye was first and definitely more innovative and influential.

Halo.

Goldeneye showed that FPS games work on a console, but it didn't really do anything that innovative. Halo made all the necessary adjustments for consoles FPS games to truly work.

Goldeneye did introduce the first person shooter (I don't care if it wasn't the first, it was the first one that mattered) to the console, and it also introduced multiplayer.

Halo, however, took both those concepts and drastically evolved them for the better. The most noteworthy example of this was the ability to move and aim at the same time. First person shooters before Halo (including Goldeneye) had the ability to move and shoot, but you had to stand still while aiming. Yes, I know the nerds among us might point out ways to aim while moving, but they were incredibly counter-intuitive and even with those ways Oddjob was still an unfair advantage. Halo's use of its controller made combat much easier, which made multiplayer more fun (Which, unfortunately made the loudmouths able to play it. Not Halo's fault)

Drastically improved gameplay. That's why Halo gets my vote.
