HALO! *fanboy rages*

That was called "sarcasm," children.

Goldeneye. I have very fond memories of playing that game.

Tho, i will give Halo credit. It started a trend of really lame FPSs, culminating in Cock of Doody: Modern Gay Fuck Stupid 2.
When i saw this thread i thought "fanboy fight" then i was surprised it was civilized. You however do not fall in that category.

Goldeneye showed that FPS can be actually amazing on the consoles. What Goldeneye started Halo continued. Halo wasnt the the game to start the dull, grey, bland shooters you see now, it was Goldeneye. Halo just knew how to keep the console FPS flagship going

I would say Goldeneye. Halo made some great innovations, but the amount of new things that Goldeneye had grossly outnumber them.

halo doesnt even belong in the same sentence with goldeneye, either in terms of innovation or quality.

Goldeneye was the first real console shooter that worked, and Halo was the first shooter that worked for a console with dual analogue sticks. Halo added things like intelligent enemies, a hot button for grenades, being able to carry a limited number of weapons, and being able to seamlessly enter and exit vehicles. My vote goes for Halo.

Halo, however, took both those concepts and drastically evolved them for the better. The most noteworthy example of this was the ability to move and aim at the same time.
Obviously never mastered C-button aiming. I had a lot a friends I played m-player Goldeneye with, but only one was able to keep up with me and master c-button aiming. And setting health to minus 10 made it pretty damn close to Counter-Strike. We had those maps memorized and would play all night. I also played four on four Halo 1 when the ethernet cable jacks connected to each other with the xbox in college. Room 414 vs room 412. That was a ball.

Halo made innovations, no doubt, but Goldeneye, with its incredible hardware limitations, was the first multiplayer (and single player) console FPS that Worked. 1 vote Goldeneye.

Goldeneye basically invented the console FPS, and Halo Combat Evolved was merely an evolution of the genre. The man who invented the wheel was more innovative than the man who used the wheel to make the cart.

Hang on... Goldeneye wasn't dull, grey and bland.
My fault i meant to say that is started all the dull, grey, bland ones. "Goldeneye clones" people trying to copy them. Better?

It's just that all the innovations were boring and counter-productive and started the chain of boring, brown FPS's.
Despite the fact that every Halo game has had bright colors?

Anyways, i think i'd have to go with Halo. Yes, Goldeneye is awesome fun and did set FPS's out on the right path, but Halo added a huge amount of gameplay features that i think a lot of people seem to overlook and take for granted. Managing two weapons? Started in Halo. Recovering health? Started in Halo. Seperate button for melee and grenade throws, rather then selecting a grenade or melee weapon? Yup, Halo.

Now im not in any way a raging Halo fanboy, but i do have to admit that Halo has truly set the mark for what games do nowadays. Whether or not you like regenerating health (i hate it in Call of Duty) or managing two weapons (i dislike in certain shooters) is entirely up to one's opinion, but if you're denying that Halo hasn't been at least one of the most influencial shooters, then there's something wrong there.

However, note that im not saying Goldeneye hasn't been influencial, in fact i think it's fair to call them equal, or even raise one above another, im just stating my opinion. And i put this disclaimer for all the Halo-haters and Goldeneye-<333's.

This

Realistically, we're comparing two behemoths of the console FPS Genre. Golden Eye wrote the book on console FPS's, Halo rewrote it. I'd say in pure ingenuity of application, Goldeneye is a winner, console FPS games basically didn't exist prior to Goldeneye, you can't be more original than the original console FPS, it's a logically fallacy.

I am going to go with Goldeneye. It set a lot of ground that Halo just expanded on.

Everyone's saying that Halo was just standing on the shoulders of Goldeneye, but remember that Goldeneye was standing on the shoulders of Doom and Wolfenstein.

Well from my standpoint, Halo is more original BECAUSE Goldeneye is a game of a movie, where as Halo is an original game.
That's my 2 cents and please, please don't try to start a flame war from this.

I'm going to say Halo. I don't remember an FPS feeling as big as Halo did, especially with its sprawling levels. Most of the FPS I remember were roaming around corridors and relatively small maps. I think Halo was definitely the first "modern" FPS, if that makes any sense.

Being a PC gamer, I was surprised to find out how many things Goldeneye did first. I know it's the first game to have a sniper rifle and I think it was the first to do escort missions.

Halo was really influential, but there really wasn't much of anything it did first.
Were there multiplayer games before Goldeneye that had a more realistic feel than running around at high speeds and launching rocket after rocket? I can't think of any, but my memory sucks, so I don't know if that's one of the characteristics to chalk up as innovative in Goldeneye.
Running around at high speed shooting endless rockets... that's pretty much describes all early FPS from Doom on.
