Now, I know the 'right' answer is the one we know as 'The Lost Levels', being the actual SMB2, with our SMB2 being a reworking of Doki Doki Panic released in America. My debate stems from the innovation and advances in gameplay that America brought about, as opposed to TLL's status as a mission pack sequel. TLL gave us ultra hard levels and poison mushrooms, while America brought diversification of the characters, making Luigi the high jumper, codifying Toad's existance, giving the characters the ability to grab and hold things (which would show up again in 3) as well as a stable of new characters who almost always show up in the side games, as well as Bob-ombs which are full on canon as early as SMB3, again.
My real debate is, does this earn it the 'right' to be 'Super Mario Bros 2' in the annals of history, or will TLL retain that title, even as largely a 'dead end' in innovation?
