Sonic, easily. The pure amount of shit on Youtube and Deviantart and all those furry sites is enough to prove my point. Plus the games always end up sucking, yet every time one gets announced they get hyped to the shithouse.

Funnily enough, I still don't understand what made the originals good. I never had the older consoles as a kid (pre-N64), but I can still play old Mario games. The original Sonic games are just shit to me.

Here's a game for everyone. Search your first name, with "the Hedgehog" after it. Chances are there's fan art called by that very name.

I'd go with Sonic since nostalgia+disappointment+furries = crazy*3.

But since that's not on the poll I'm going with Minecraft. The game it's self is ok, although I have some problems with it, but I swear everybody playing the game seems to take every attack on it or it's creator as a personal e-duel challenge.

until a few years ago, I'd say Dragon Quest, as it was by far the largest JRPG series in Japan (we Westerners caught the Final Fantasy bug, but that was just an evolved form of Dragon Quest bug which was ridiculously rampant in japan.)

now I really don't know. moba games probably. They have trashtalking built into their mechanics so the fans seem particularly virulent.

Personally I would've said the Sonic franchise.

There are definitely a fair few fanatics within the fanbase. And trust me, some of those guys can argue amongst themselves about anything so long as it is tangentially linked to the franchise.

And then there's some of the images. Even on the non-R34 side of things.

Here's a game for everyone. Search your first name, with "the Hedgehog" after it. Chances are there's fan art called by that very name.

So yeah, the Sonic franchise.
hahaha, I found mine and I think it wins

Of those, I'd guess Final Fantasy.
You'd get what I'm saying if you've ever seen a hardcore fan.
The one who knew that the NA titles were wrong...BACK IN THE EARLY '90s because they were such a hardcore fan.
We'll see where the rest of them go in about twenty years. Because that hardcore FF fan is still complaining about something FF related to this day.

That, my online compatriots, is long-term freakin' devotion.

For the creepy, uncanny valley fandoms...
Sonic, Pokemon, Kingdom Hearts, Naruto.
The bad art and fan-fics are way too numerous for these particular franchises.
The exact reason why remains a mystery.

I think I'd have to go 'Halo', but to be honest I'm not sure of the scale of some of those other fanbases. What I will say though is that I don't think it's Mass Effect seeing as they alienated half of their fans with the last game (I have about 7 friends who played 1 and 2, and didn't even touch 3. I was the only one), and WoW's is in decline.

Although as others have pointed out, Sonic fans are devoted to the point where their optimism whenever a new game comes out is a joke even amongst themselves.

I voted Pokemon probably because I've seen intense competitive battlers who take things way too seriously. I'll throw some Zelda fans into the ring, being a Zelda fanatic myself, I'm willing to admit we can be pretty crazy and overly defensive of the series and Nintendo sometimes.

In the end every fanbase will carry lots of crazy fans, each poll choice listed has their fair share of nutjobs who take their love a little to far, but at least it keeps things interesting am I right?

Judging from the extremely varied answers in this thread: they all do.

That have affected me personally? None really. I suppose the Halo fans had some extra shit-to-be-insane-about during the console war period because of exclusivity.

Sonic fans went into a blood-crazed frothing frenzy over his eye color. For all of the craziness of other fandoms, Sonic's goes above and beyond the call of duty to bring us the absolute pinnacle of crazy. The Sonic fanbase makes the ME3 ending ordeal look like a polite conversation.

I was going to say the original Fallouts, but I think most of those are a little more "crazy" than No Mutants Allowed.

That's amazing. I can't even recall the eye colours of any video game characters. I'd just answer "Brown, probably."

Incredible.

Especially for a video game character for which there is no romantic following, like the Mass Effect cast. Although that would hardly make an eye colour argument any less creepy and/or ridiculous.

That's actually the first one I thought of when I read the title. Yeah the Sonic fanbase can be pretty nuts, and that's even without the creepy fanart. The creepy fanart just puts them over the top.

oh jeez... uhh... hrm... so strictly in the 'game' category? well that cuts out the furries, emos, comic-nerds, trekkies, star wars geeks, dr.who fans, any kind of 'large' SCIFI show fan not in those top three, the literature nerds such as the Tolkininans or Martinians, or god the twihards *shutters*, Harry Potter-ers, bronnies, OG cartoon nerds, OG cartoon network nerds, new cartoon network nerds, nick-ers *snickers*, anything from japan that's not connected to a console device, and the slew of real-life fanfiction fans all over what happens in hollywood...

okay, games-only territory...

oh jesus *hand on head*

i'd say the most 'devoted' are Nintendo fans, purely from the fact that Nintendo is one of the longest runners and still kicking with effectively the same games and rehashing childish nostalgia... they were 'IT' before the Halo-bros, the CoDf*gs, the madden-i don't even know what to call these people, EA fans, WoWers, EVE 'players', and whatever the heck else out there...

and Persona 'fans' fall under MegaTen fans... don't be silly and separate them, they'd get lost in the sea of unconsciousness otherwise :p
