I've had the God of War series on my mind lately, for several reasons that are irrelevant here. As a writer, and a gamer that pays particular attention to plot and story, I'd like to hear what everyone thinks of the series.

Which game, fellow escapists, has the best story? Why?

Lately, I've taken up the task of analyzing video game stories in writing. I deconstruct them, and pick out significant messages, discussing what is good and what is bad. I've already completed my critique of the first God of War, and the second is underway.

In my opinion, the first God of War is the best of the series. We get a badass character who, despite his fury and hotheadedness, is surprisingly deep emotionally. The story is engaging, easy to understand, and gives us a cool rendition of Greek Mythology.

The second game was atrocious, story-wise. Everything is over-the-top in a bad way. Kratos seems to have lost a great deal of intellect between games, and his only emotion is unbridled rage. A legion of Greek characters are plucked from Greek mythology for the sake of having more boss fights and references. The plot is ridiculous, convoluted, and gimmicky.

The third, despite it building off of the second game's story, was decent. It brought back a good deal of Kratos' emotions, albeit a tad late. It tried to fix some of the silly plot points from the second game, but made a bunch more of its own. The gods became very quirky very fast. There were a bunch of veiled messages delivered throughout the game that made the story somewhat deeper.

Again, what do you all think?

I think you basically nailed it. The first one is the only one that's stayed interesting, since it's so rooted in the character - the second one felt like they swapped most character traits for anger.

Wow, what a coincidentally-timed thread.

Nevertheless, I absolutely agree the first game's story was the most interesting. The battles had more emotional context and the character's motivations felt more understandable. Kratos was never intended to be a "realistic" or reasonable character, but at least you could kind of get why he was doing what he was. He was crafty in a brutal, head-smashing way. His determination to avenge a wrongdoing at any cost to himself made his journey to ultimate power entertaining to watch.

Also, anyone else think it was completely out of character for Kratos to just start reveling in the violence his followers did in his name? He was never out for glory. I guess you could say his revenge left him feeling empty and he turned to a godhood of mindless hedonism to escape, but that might be giving the writers too much credit.

First and Second were good. If I had to pick one id say the First.

If anyone votes for 3 they clearly havent played any other in the series. I was really disappointed with 3, it just felt so dragged out.. dont want to give away spoilers though so ill leave it at that.

I agree, it was strange that Kratos became such a bastard. When I saw that for the first time, I was so confused. After playing through the first game, I came to like Kratos. I cared about why he was doing things. Then 2 happens, and we find out that he's worse than Ares. I felt betrayed. I suddenly found myself despising Kratos, thinking he was whiny and arrogant. The writer's could have done a much better job with 2.

2. I hated the first game. The combat was good, sure, but everything else was so boring. The enemies were reppetetive, the story was slow, and the game was also very short.

Plus it had that GOD AWFUL desert section.

None of them, they raped Greek mythology, and only had hack and slash button mashing for a reward. The gore and violence appealed to some people tho, so I guess the 3rd and hopefully last of the series gave the masses what they wanted.

Plus they couldn't get the camera controls right (they didn't even try really). But this series will forever go down as a kid gore fest. Story doesn't matter for this type of fan base. Well, that's just my opinion anyways, I'm sure others thought more highly of the stories than I did.
As much as I'd love to agree with you, for my sake, I have to assert that the story (of the first at least) isn't as bad as people tend to think. I understand that it is a gore fest, and that it re-wrote the mythology, but there are many things to appreciate in the character-driven story.

You'll probably think I'm playing angst-y artist, and calling crap gold, but the first God of War delivers a lot of subtle messages. I'm not saying that the God of War series is a shining example of story telling or "the best that ever was", but it does have a surprisingly strong story, if you consider the pieces that make it up.

personally, I say number one. But I also say that all three were kinda half-baked as far as plot. If you want a morally questionable hero with a decent plot, I much rather prefer Prince of Persia or some of the games that have a "good" and "evil" ending.

Personally I thought the Hades level was much worse. I even enjoyed the desert section. It reminded me of that one very similar section in Ocarina of Time, plus the Sirens are probably one of my favorite God of War enemies to fight. They're like Medusa/Gorgons except they can't pull a cheap insta-kill out of their butts whenever they feel like it.

You missed Chains of Olympus...
Those other games don't exist to me. In the grand scheme, they don't really matter to the story. 3 vaguely references them a few times, but nothing of significance seems to come of it. From what I can tell, they just warped the overall story even more and added all sorts of contradictions and mistakes.

One.

It's based around the character himself, not the setting.

The story of the games lack subtlety. They stomp through the very well-crafted Greek mythology, which is extremely intertwined and loaded with honest and effective morality tales. They look at the very human Greek Gods, and just murder them without respect. I dislike the games because they are a complete bastardisation of Greek Mythology, which I've been an enormous fan of for many years.

Also I have that one friend who thinks he's an expert on Greek Mythology because he played through the series. Fuck that guy.

I'm a writer myself and I take game stories very seriously. I really tried to like 2 and 3's stories but they just aren't good enough to follow the first. Yahtzee wrote an interesting article on Kratos and the way he changed through the games.

It's good to see another with a passion for writing and video game stories. I'll check that link out in a moment.
