I liked Metal Gear Solid's Snake-eater health system.
this, shame theres no option for it. i've always been opposed to the "stand still for a few seconds to heal all wounds" method

I like regenerative, health packs just don't do it for me. Because then you have to have a health bar, and it's less realistic.

Is it just me, or am I the only one who saw a thread exactly similar to this a few months ago? Oh well, I must be imagining things. Health packs work well for platformers, like Jak II. Regeneration works really well for shooters that revolve around a cover mechanic. Like where you take cover behind a pillar or chest high wall, shoot at the enemy, and then take cover again so the health can get back up again, like in Uncharted.

I think regenerative health makes games too easy to beat. You have a functionally unlimited supply of health, all it forces you to do is find cover every few minutes.
I liked it when, if you got so low on health there was a better chance of winning the lottery than finishing the level, that you actually had to start over, and play the level with more caution or skill. Regenerative health has made beating a game less about skill, and more about "did you put in the prerequisite number of hours to finish the game."

And hiding in a corner waiting for your wounds to magically disapeer isnt?

Um.. why should players regenerate health during rounds? It works just fine like in Counter-Strike. Player can't take many hits. Aiming counts more than mindless spray & pray. Flashbangs and grenades to flush out campers. When hit by stray bullets, seek cover.
This.

A bandaid and some Neo-Sporin do not a magical Cure Serious Wounds spell make.

regenerative makes the game kinda less intimidating, while health packs have the problem of you can do things like survive 4 shock-combos on you simultaneously. MGS3's health system (semi regenerative with full medi-kits) works the best. HUDs are really useful because they give you better info then a red screen tint or a shield bar (honestly, how is Master chief that much of a pussy, his body armor allows him to withstand jumps from orbit, but he gets killed by a few .50 caliber rounds being unloaded into his chest, each using a fraction of the energy his suit takes from jumps)

Health packs are much better and i like far cry 2's morphine syrettes as it sort of explains how you can keep fighting after using them as opposed to picking up a white box with a cross on it and magically regenerating

I voted regenerating; neither of them are particularly realistic, and this one I feel allows more a more fast-paced system, as most FPSs are (however, a strategical army FPS, say, would be a different story).

regenerating health usually results in the player hiding behind a rock the second an enemy does so much as glance at you (if you have to fear for your life in a game then you are either playing a good survival horror or a bad FPS).
That's not necessarily true - it depends on how much damage you can take before dying with regenerative health. For example, in Halo you can take a decent amount of damage, and it's only when you get into really insane situations that you have to hide. Which, incidentally, lasts for only a few seconds, whereas in a health pack system once you've lost a lot of health, you have to hide until you find a health pack (which could be ages).

My favorite health system to this day in an FPS is Far cry 2's. It's the perfect balanced of regenerative health/pack. Your health only regenerates as much as the health cell your health is currently at, if you go too far into the red you begin to bleed out and you gotta first aid yourself. Then you got the syrettes to give you back some health, hence forth acting like health packs. No better system has bin made in my opinion.

There's something seriously wrong when you can shoot someone with a shotgun three times and they can run around a corner for a couple of seconds and be perfectly fine. I know health packs aren't any more realistic, but seriously. I like Counter-Strike's health system better because in real life, you don't have your health regenerate or get fixed up by a health pack.

What I want is like Fallout 3's system mixed with Counter-Strikes. Like, it doesn't regenerate and if you get shot in the leg, you limp. If you get shot in the arm, you don't aim as well or can't hold 2 handed weapons. If you get shot in the head, even once, you die. Ultra realistic for me.

I like the health system in Far cry 2 where you have a limited ammount of morphien, which health you back up to full health.
your health is in bars so if you get all of one bar depleted and half of another the second bar will returnt to full however the first bar will stay empty.

Tbh neither really works for me. Both are "unrealistic" no matter whatever anyone says; in real life you can neither jump on a health pack and suddenly be at full strength again, and neither can you run round a corner and hide for a minute and be ok after. What they need to do is really combine the two systems, ie. you get health packs but you cant just use them instantly, you need to be under cover and bandaging yourself, taking time out of fighting off mobs. That, i think, would be the best option.

No matter what happens, no option whatsoever of health regeneration will ever be realistic in a video game, unless ofc every time you get damaged they fly you off to hospital quickly for a couple of weeks. This, i believe however, would get a bit annoying on your second try on the D-Day landings after having the brand spanking new CoD8 for about a month, dying instantly once again before your feet have the chance of touching the sand.

If they are used properly either system can work.

I liked the system in Halo:CE. The combination of regenerating shields and health packs worked well, as even if you were knocked down to low health the game still gave you a reasonable amount of life to take down the enemy with.

- You might enjoy Jagged Alliance series too. Gunshots actually get worse if they're not tended and regaining health isn't just as simple as pressing the button and see the red bar jump up. I wish there were more realistic games out there, not just running and gunning around.

The Resistance: Fall of Man health system is my favourite - you have four bars of health, if you lose a whole bar, you cannot replenish that bar until you find a health canister (usually from killing enemies or finding them lying around). If you lose, say, half of one bar, that regenerates quickly after a few seconds of not getting hurt.

It's a good, challenging system that encourages you to kill enemies for health, rather than let your friendly AI do all the work while you hide behind a wall waiting for your health to come back. Too bad they scrapped that in Resistance 2.
