healt packs. But you shouldn't be able to pick 'em up....
I'm thinking about Castle Wolfenstein food or Serious Sam potions...

I like the regenerative idea.
While it adds strategy and maybe a bit more luck into a shooter, health packs sometimes become a pain and can just make a game less fun and more work.

Left 4 dead's way of doing it pretty good.

How ever I did love Def Jam Fight for NY's double health bar system where your health was the lower one but it regenerated to the second one.

and it just stacks up if you dont have to hide under a rock every 10 seconds. that wil break the flow of a game

I like both. Halo style.

I think the fully regen style is a bit easy. Like in Gears of War, all you need do is duck behind a wall for a few seconds and your fine.

I have seen all of the methods work well. My only issue with regenerative health is that on certain FPS games it is way too generous. You should not be able to stroll around on "medium" difficulty without dodging or hiding because the regen speed makes you all but invincible.

I can't stand regenerative health. As many above me have said, it breaks the flow if you have to hide behind a wall for 10 seconds if you take a couple of shots. Halo 1 had a great combination of the two, and regenerative health (i.e, a shield) actually made sense. In Call of Duty it makes no sense whatsoever.

And there's a certain thrill in knowing you're stuck with very little health and have no option but to just go out blasting.

There's something seriously wrong when you can shoot someone with a shotgun three times and they can run around a corner for a couple of seconds and be perfectly fine. I know health packs aren't any more realistic, but seriously. I like Counter-Strike's health system better because in real life, you don't have your health regenerate or get fixed up by a health pack.

What I want is like Fallout 3's system mixed with Counter-Strikes. Like, it doesn't regenerate and if you get shot in the leg, you limp. If you get shot in the arm, you don't aim as well or can't hold 2 handed weapons. If you get shot in the head, even once, you die. Ultra realistic for me.
Its all personal preference I know, and I'm not bashing any game when I say this, but realism does not necessarily translate into a good gaming experience.

In 'real life' if you take a bullet then chances are you will fall to the ground and bleed profusely. The wound will take a long time to heal and if you are unlucky the bullet will have either a) broken a bone or two, b) smashed up some important vital organ, c) torn up the muscles around where it hit, or d) all of the above. The consequence of taking this hit is a trip to hospital and tbh I don't think going to A&E and then spending a long time recovering (or alternatively slowly and agonisingly bleeding to death 'cos you were unlucky and the bullet cut a main artery) is going to be much fun in a computer game.

Realism is not what is important. CS health system works because the game is played in short rounds. In HL the health pack system works because you are supposed to be constantly progressing through the environments towards an ultimate goal. In CoD4 the regen system works because you don't want true realism and the gamer is expected to perform a 'semi-simulation' of a modern soldier experience, therefore taking cover as bullets whiz over your head is an extension of that experience.

Regarding multiplayer, it depends on how the game will function. In Day of Defeat there is low health and timed waves of respawn, this works very well in simulating the meat-grinder of WW2 combat and forces the player to be very careful about running into the open. Quake Live works with health packs because it is purely about skill, speed and map strategy. Battlefield Heroes team-healing system works because it encourages team play in order to win.

It all comes down to what the game experience is supposed to be. Though personally I like the health pack games, its just my preference.

Wargamer's avatar is mesmerizing...it's hard to look away.

Anyways, I prefer health packs over regenerating health.
That doesn't mean I always want to use that health system exclusively.
It depends on the game...it could use one or the other...or both.

As for regenerating health being more realistic, you must be joking...
I wasn't aware that advanced space marine like power armor had actually been fabricated.

The health packs in Left 4 Dead by far, the most realistic one so far.
EDIT: Rime?
They weren't really that much different from 'Doom' style health pack besides the fact that you hardly got any of them (so you face a dilema as to whether you should use them) and they took time to use (so healing in an emergancy was a big no-no), you'll still be completely ok after you apply some bandages and disinfectant, no matter how serious or grave the wound is (so we can't rate them high on realism either).

I personally think the system used in the first Killzone worked quite well, you had a limited amount of health regen but you had to make use of health packs for the serious healing (which were often aquired by killing enemies, so if you couldn't find any you had to throw yourself into another group of enemies).

Health packs, including hinderance of movement/aiming á la Rainbow Six games.
It just makes more sense (while it's still unrealistic) than cowering in a corner for 30 seconds until you're all healed up.

Health packs are much better and i like far cry 2's morphine syrettes as it sort of explains how you can keep fighting after using them as opposed to picking up a white box with a cross on it and magically regenerating
This
Farcry 2 was, IMHO, a very dissapointing game but the health system was the most entertaining and immersive i can remember.

From everyones responses, I get the feeling the majority of you are speaking of Multiplayer. I personally can't stand multiplayer FPS games, so I have no problem at all with regenerating health. Also considering that I play games to relieve stress rather than add to it, I would of course prefer the less stressful Regenerating Health. However, I don't mind Health Kits so long as it doesn't feel like I'm searching for 3 hours for a single kit when the same ammount of time could see me regenerate it at least twice.

I know it's "old school" and such, and I grew up on those things. Perhaps it is why, after so long, that I am tired of having to hunt down those elusive health kits along with Ammo and everything else under the sun that FPS games want you to look for these days...

EDIT: Edinflames says a pretty good bit about it that I agree on. It is primarilly a factor of what the gameplay is like and what handles best. I just prefer Regenerative, that's all.

Being a massive Red Orchestra fan, I prefer no magic health systems at all.

For singleplayer games I like health packs, regenerating health feels way too easy.
