Slashes. People keep assuming slashing means a machete or whatnot. Why not a chainsaw? you could tear through zombie after zombie with that, no problem. I can't think of anything portable you could really run around smashing zombies that would be as easy an efficient as a chainsaw.

Unless, of course, you had some sort of smasher-mechanism that protected your stronghold while you waited for the zombie apocalypse to end. So in THAT case, smashing, but that's more so a trap than a weapon. For a weapon though, definitely slicing.
Have you ever tried runing with a chainsaw ? Those things are heavy. It would wear you out wayyy too quickly, id reserve that for a last stand situation . This is the same thins for smaching , im not walking around with a sledge hammer thank you very much. I choose something that slashes , maybe a battle scyth ( good luck finding one ) or a fire axe , yeah a fire axe.

to have an effective smashing tool, your going to have to have alot of endurance to slug that thing around against multiple zombies, but then again slashing you have to be pretty damn accurate to do it right against zombies.

i'll just take a dual wielded warhammer on one side and a katana on the other

Problem?

Definitely smashing. Easy to use with plenty of applications. Just get yourself to a six foot wall and start crushing. Once the pile's almost to you, move on. A nice sledge hammer or something like this.

I'm good with a sword so I could decapitate pretty reliably, or with the right blade slice through the skull, but smashing weapons have a lower skill requirement to reliably destroy a brain.

Slashing looks cooler, but I have to go with smashing. It would be less likely to get a sledge hammer stuck in someone's head than a bladed weapon (not like I would know firsthand....), and the added weight does more damage to the bones and cartilage, helping to stop the zombies faster.

Does the Hammer of Dawn count as smashing? I know that's what I'd want in case of zombie invasion.

smashing takes a lot of effort to the swing. You also need a lot more room to wind up, and the follow through pulls you more in. Plus the vibration if you hit the ground can be rather jolting.

Personally, if I need a short range melee weapon, I'd go with a hand and a half (bastard) broadsword. Its an easy swing, just about anyone can use one, nice weight, and feels rather natural.

But then again, if you're just going to try and muscle your way through zombies, you're pretty much screwed anyway.

A gun that shoot swords would be the logical solution
Isn't that a crossbow?
no, a crossbow shoots arrows.

Imagine a rifle that shoots katanas

lol
Or you can go with the <url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDvuBY97cD4>Triple Bladed Sword

Its a sword that shoots swords.

...

also, I cant imagine a gun that shoots katanas being a good weapon. Thats a curved blade, so a crvued barrel, which will be awkward to say the least when it shoots. and a rather lengthy barrel that that.

how do so many geeks and nerds no so little of the difference between Zombies and the Infected?
ZOMBIE BLOOD WON'T MAKE YOU A ZOMBIE!
as for me? slash them fuckers to bits with a claymore. it's sturdy and double-edged, plus the sheer weight alone almost makes it a smasher as well as a slasher.

Smashing. The only reliable way to kill zombies by slashing is decapitation, but unless you're a trained swordsman, it's not very probable. Although something that can puncture a skull is the best. Not as much mess.
This is a very good point. The probability to slash a zombies head off is low and beating it is easier and allows less blood if you can become a zombie via blood.

The best procedure against the true original Romero type of zombie is to simply walk away from them at a modest pace, so they cannot catch up with you.
The only challenge is to avoid places where you can get surrounded.

Breaking bones or cutting of limbs is not going to happen and zombies don't need blood, so clubs and swords are ineffective.
Getting zombie bits on you also makes you a zombie, so not an option.

A long broom handle with a sharpened end to poke through the eye into the brain would be a better idea, but unless you have mastered such an unusual skill, that won't work either.

So you walk or you use firearms.
C'mon man, don't be that guy. Just choose slash or smash, please?
\

Fine, slash then.
Specificly a katana. A skilled or lucky person might cut some tendons on the arms or legs
immobilizing the zombie.
A sword is also much lighter to use than a big club and it takes multiple hits to completely cavein a skull, while a cracked skull wouldn't kill the brain.

I have nothing better to do at 3 a.m. so here goes: If I was in a situation involving zombies and I had the option of choosing between smashing or slashing my undead foes, I would go with slashing. Since stabbing isn't an option, definitely slashing. But why slashing? Because a limbless zombie is less of a threat. I'd imagine if the corpse was rotten enough I could pop a head off or two. But I'm not certain. Perhaps I should give smashing a reconsideration. Got to watch for soaring brain matter though.
