So I only have sixty bucks to spend, and both games come out tomorrow. I really like what I've seen of Dishonored, and it seems like it may capture that Bioshock magic I doubt Infinite will have. But I have a friend who's been playing games longer than I have who insists that X-COM will be the second coming of Christ. Just to give you an idea what kind of games I like, Spec Ops: The Line is the only game that's come out this year that I thought was any good. So what does the Escapist think?

XCOM has a demo. I'd recommend trying it out and if you like it, take that over Dishonored. If you're 'eh' or don't like it, then go with Dishonored.

Dishonored need the support its a new and very strong ip as well as being a possible GOTY Contender. Don't let the COD's and super mega sequels squelch another good game, Like they did Beyond good and evil. My guess is x-com has a much smaller budget and there for will take less copies sold to be a "Hit"

Spec Ops is your Game of the Year at this point, aye?

Really, the games are so different in every way. It would all really depend on whether you feel like a turn-based strategy title, or what is essentially a shooter with special abilities to freshen up the genre. Either one will most likely give you tons of replayability.

Personally, I would choose XCOM (which I am getting); but with you enjoying Spec Ops, I'd have to say you might feel more comfortable with Dishonored?

Figure XCOM is like a mix between Civilization and Full Spectrum Warrior (anyone remember that bad boy?!).

I'm buying both. Hooray for employment!

As for which is best, well... it's actually a pretty stupid question. Nobody here has played both of them so we can't comment on quality. The two games are different enough to make comparison pointless. One is a turn based tactics games with strategic resource management. The other is a first person action/stealth game.

Yeah, I'm a console peasant, and last I checked XBOX didn't have a demo for X-COM. Spec Ops may be my GOTY, but that's only because Deus Ex: HR was released a month too soon.

Here's maybe a better question: Is X-COM anything like Fallout Tactics? Because I loved that game.

It's a turn based strategy game, in that way it is like Fallout Tactics, but I will go out on a limb and suggest Xcom. Turn based strategy games don't get the AAA treatment like I would say this game is, and being available on all three main platforms makes it easy for someone to get. The demo was basically just the tutorial, so you wouldn't get the best impression.

Go with your gut. Would you rather get an awesome looking first person action adventure title, or a turn based scifi strategy game? What kind of game haven't you played in a while. I'm getting Xcom first and will be getting the other once I finish Xcom because they both look awesome.

Totally different games. You must have a preference.
If not, then maybe play length will be a deciding factor? I hear Dishonored is somewhere in between 8-11 hours, and warrants at least one additional playthrough to see how things change with a different play style. XCOM will likely last you dozens and even hundreds of hours. I'm not accounting for quality here, since you could very well enjoy them both equally.

I've played about two hours of XCOM tonight (had it pre-loaded). It's still not very deep yet, but still enjoyable. I love strategy games, though. Beer in one hand, mouse in the other.

If you're still trying to decide, I would go with Dishonored. It's had my attention for awhile. The sheer uniqueness of it puts it on top over XCOM.

If you liked Spec Ops: The Line for its story then go for Dishonored. Arkane put allot of effort into making Dunwall, its inhabitants and the story behind the game.

I'm probably going to get Dishonored first but they both seem really good.

Dishonored is going to win game of the year, just you wait.
X-COM is decent, but I've played games like it before, and I enjoyed said games much more than X-COM.

That's... incredibly vague. The only thing I can take from that is that the kind of game you like consists solely of FPS with good story elements.

Otherwise, the games aren't even remotely alike so there really shouldn't be much conflict. Do you want to play:

a.) A turn based tactical strategy game with a large cult following powered almost exclusively by nostalgia exploitation or...

b.) A first person action/stealth game lifting elements from Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, and Hitman but could be more briefly summarized as "Assassin's Creed but steampunk".

There is another thread just like this one: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.390193-Poll-Dishonored-or-XCOM-Enemy-Unknown

Also, if you are short on cash, shouldn't it be a better to buy a game that is on sale now and save some cash? Then wait a few months and buy both Dishonored and X-Com for the price of 1 game.

Plus, Dishonored and X-Com are like apples and oranges.

They're two different genres, so you can't really compare them.
It all comes down to your own preferences.

They are two very different games but I get why you have choose (I'm in the same boat). Based on your gaming taste I would suggest Dishonored. If you're not sure try out the XCOM Demo.

I'm personally buying Dishonored this afternoon. XCOM will wait for a Steam sale.

Long-time X-Com fan, so the choice was clear... XCOM is arriving today, and Dishonored is waiting its turn, even after ACIII comes out. (Don't have ACIII on pre-order, either... which is a first.)

I was enthralled by the early demo vids of Dishonored, but the more I watched them, the more I felt a solid Bioshock vibe coming through. Sadly, Bioshock the one disk in my library that has sat dormant since I stopped playing mid-level and ejected it. The story was good, and the universe is intriguingly unique, but the linear lack of choice compaired to true RPGs killed it for me. (Yes, the big seller for Dishonored is the open playground setting for the missions, so I haven't written it off COMPLETELY, but I'd still rather sink my teeth into XCOM, and eventually ACIII, first.)
