I'm not going to read through 5 pages just so I can see if this has been said:

The Lord of the Rings isn't a Trilogy, it is one book divided into three parts, and the film is supposedly the same. Sure you can buy them separately, but they are all one story.
Very good point.
Isn't that what a Trilogy is though, would you say that The Matrix films where a single film and a Duology because there is a time skip.

Straight out of a dictionary: "Trilogy: A collection of three mediums in one. A three-part series"
To be accurate, Lord of the Rings is one book divided into 6 parts. The publishing company that originally released it thought it would sell better that way.

The Hitchhiker's Trilogy

/thread.
What? Weren't there like, 5 or 6 books in that series? That doesn't count.
It does if Lord of the Rings does.

If it has to be a movie trilogy then I suppose Star Wars, but they were both very good.
I would vote for 'Hitchhickers Guide to the Galaxy' as THE trilogy if i can include books.
What about the other two books?
... There are five books in 'The Hictchhickers Guide to the Galaxy' trilogy.
I probably should have picked up on that sooner. I was just assuming that you didn't like the last 2 books.
They are:
1) The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
2) The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
3) Life, the Universe and Everything
4) So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish "a trilogy in four parts"
5) Mostly Harmless "The fifth book in the increasingly inaccurately named Hitchhiker's Trilogy"
6) And Another Thing... not released yet and not written by Adams

Well sure, but the problem with Lord Of The Rings is that there is no resolution till the end of the three books/movies. Star Wars has a real ending in each movie, same as The Matrix. In Lord Of The Rings it is one long, single story cut into three books.

...and before its said, yes i do realise that Star Wars is actualy 6 films but the first/latest three dont realy count as part of the original Star Wars plot, so for me the first/latest three are a competly differnt film.
They do really count, same universe, same story, same creator, they put the CAN in CANON. Just because the first three episodes were released last, doesn't make anything but "Episode IV: A New Hope" scroll up that screen in large easy to read letters.

Terry Gilliam's "Trilogy of Imagination" films ("Time Bandits", "Brazil", and "The Advntures of Baron Munchausen". If you've never seen those, go see them. NOW.).
First two are brilliant, especially the directors cut of "Brazil" , "Munchausen not so much, although when I saw it at age 13 I did develop a severe crush on Uma.

So are the others you mentioned, In The Matrix, the war with the Machines is still going on, untill Neo beats Smith, In Star Wars, The battle between The Empire and The Reble Alliance isn't over until The Emporer is killed and the Deathstar is destroyed, just like in main LORT books/films the story isn't over untill the ring is destroyed. Just because these other films (with the exception of Matrix Reloaded) don't end on a cliff-hanger dosen't mean that it is an ending.

Alright, I see your point.
