It's been years since I played a JRPG and am thinking of starting on one. I bought an Xbox 360 not long ago and have purchased a lot of games on sales that I haven't gotten around to playing yet. Which one do you think I should start on?

Edit

Sorry guys I apparently messed this up. I have a list of 5 RPGs I bought but haven't played. They were supposed to be the poll options but they don't appear. Here's the list:

FF XIII
Start Ocean: TLH
Magna Carta 2
Eternal Sonata
Tales of Vesperia

If you have a PS2 Persona 3+4 are really good. Just stay reaaaaaally far away from Eternal Sonata.
EDIT: Just saw you said Magna Carta 2. From what I've seen from a Let's Play, the story and characters are incredibly dumb and bad and awful and I hate them. The combat system seems okay.

Hmm weird. Its my first time starting a poll thread. Is it by design that I don't see it or am I missing something?

DAMN IT! Ninjas! On the first comment!

Xbox you say? Blue Dragon and Lost Oddesy. (Haven't played either, but heard good things about.)

Resonance of Fate is fantastic, if a bit difficult.

Hmm... That's all I have at the moment. Sorry, bro.

When setting up the thread, check the 'yes, i want to add a poll to this thread' button, and then type what the poll options are when prompted.

OP: Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Final Fantasy XIII, and Resonance of Fate are my recommendations.
I saw that, and I clicked yes and typed in the options but it didn't show anyways.

Sigh

I'll just edit the post and type in the options.

Lost Odyssey is really good. Can't really recommend Final Fantasy 13 though... That's the only time that I've heard "It gets really fun 25 hours in!" for a FF game, and while its pretty much right, its still not worth the time.

Of course, If I REALLY had to say, get a SNES emulator, plug your 360 controller into your PC and play Final Fantasy 6!

Vesperia. Play Vesperia.

The Tales series as a whole should've taken over as the face of the JRPG back a while ago. Final Fantasy hasn't been on their best game lately but the Tales series has been kicking ass and hasn't let up (My intro to the series being with Symphonia).

Yeah, I've never tried to set up a poll, but it seems like 9/10 of them fail to show up, so don't worry, this site just seems bad at polls.

Anyway, haven't played any of the one's mentioned. I've played the last Remnant, that seemed ok, but you already have 5, that seems like enough for the time being. I'll put my vote towards Magna Carta 2, just for the historical reference that likely has absolutely nothing to do with the thing it's historically referencing.

Tales of Vesperia is very good. Personally I wouldn't bother with Eternal Sonata... The story is AWFUL!

Out of those? Tales of Vesperia. I haven't played it yet, but I've played other Tales games (Symphonia being one of my favorite games ever), and I've heard it's a great addition to the series.

I've beat FF6 before. One of my favorite old school games.

Have tried playing FF7 but can't seem to make it more than a few hours in. I love the beginning but the required chocobo hunting part always puts me in a shitty mood for some reason.

FF7 does drag a bit in the beginning. Midgar can be pretty slow paced and the 2-hour exposition-fest in Kalm is excruciating, but try to stick with it if you ever give it another shot. Catching the chocobo is an annoying task, but you only have to do it once and the game just keeps getting better afterwards.

As far as the list you posted, I've heard good things about the Star Ocean series, why not start with that?

I'm having a decent time with Tales of Vesperia right now, but I would definitely recommend Star Ocean TLH over it. And if you can find Star Ocean 3, all the better.

Of those, Tales of Vesperia.

FF XIII - Worse writing than any other JRPG I have ever played. This is a game where the dialogue is so bad that I muted my TV during the cutscenes because I was too embarrassed to listen to it. Other than that, it has some pretty visuals and a decent combat system once you get paradigms (which is indeed after a few hours). This may or may not be worth it depending on how easily annoyed you are.

Start Ocean: TLH - Naaaah. While the combat system is probably fun once you get into it, I couldn't stand the characters, the story or the visual style. You may enjoy it more than I did.

Magna Carta 2 - This game is Korean and therefore not a JRPG. Disqualified by technicality.

Eternal Sonata - Haven't played this, though I hear the voice acting makes the dialogue hard to endure (you only get the English dub track on the 360 version).

Tales of Vesperia - Probably your best bet here. A fun, cheerful JRPG with an entertaining plot. It takes a lot of stock character archetypes and cliches and plays with them, either using them directly to take advantage of what made these cliches fun in the first place, or twisting them to make them more believable. Combat is good too (albeit easily broken).

Vesperia also features an excellent English dub. Maybe not quite as rare as it used to be, but it's easily the best on the 360.
