Personally, I'd take Tales of Vesperia or Eternal Sonata out of those. I think I'd put Vesperia slightly above the latter, though. FF XIII is fun for a time, but there's a difficulty brick wall at some point that I couldn't bring myself to get past. Can't say much for Star Ocean: TLH except it bored me pretty quickly (love SO1 and 2 actually). Magna Carta, I've never even played, so I can't say anything about it.

First and foremost Vesparia, one of my favorite JRPGs for the 360.Excellent game play, decent story(that kind of shits it self in the third act), great characters(which make up for the aforementioned story) and plenty of things to do.

If you enjoy it go on to Star Ocean 4, similar game play but the cut scenes can be horrendously long;luckily the give you a text recap if you skip the scene. The characters and story themselves are solid but nothing really stands out. The sidequests and grinding needed for them is a tad on the insane side.

Eternal Sonata is by no means bad, the battles have nice dark/light mechanic that determines what special attacks are available but it gets kind of stale near the end. The story is a environmentalist one but to it's credit it never felt too heavy handed:until the credits where the characters straight up tell you it is.It's definitely a mixed bag but you could do worse.

I've only played XIII on that list (which, as long as you don't mind linear gameplay, is really great), but I'm saddened to see a distinct lack of Lost Odyssey. That one's amazing.

It's been years since I played a JRPG and am thinking of starting on one. I bought an Xbox 360 not long ago and have purchased a lot of games on sales that I haven't gotten around to playing yet. Which one do you think I should start on?

Edit

Sorry guys I apparently messed this up. I have a list of 5 RPGs I bought but haven't played. They were supposed to be the poll options but they don't appear. Here's the list:

FF XIII
Start Ocean: TLH
Magna Carta 2
Eternal Sonata
Tales of Vesperia
If you have 10$ you can get Cthulhu Saves the World, a amazing indie JRPG, its more or less a parody game, but you should get it if you can.

I'd say Eternal Sonata and
Tales of Vesperia are fun JRPG, if you don't like the traditional style RPG.
They don't have very amazing stories, but they have really fun game play.

Final Fantasy XIII is a good one, if you don't want all that game play getting in the way of your story. Though personally, I found the story boring, I heard it gets interesting only a few hours in.

Star Ocean made me bored, fast.

I never played Magna Carta 2.

One of my favorites is Lost Odyssey. AMAZING story, that catches you right from the start. Game play is pretty fun too.

For 360 go out and buy Lost Odyssey. It had a good story and was better than the last few FFs. Star Ocean was ok. I hate FF 13 with a passion with the power of a thousand suns. Snow, one of the main characters, is the single biggist douche in the history of fiction. i have not played the other 3.

my only other advise is go buy a PS3, go onto the PSN and buy some of the old FFs. personaly I would start with FF9. It is my favorite and it has ViVi in it. Look him up.

Iv'e played all EXCEPT tales of vesperia, i never played a tales game , and it is a massive fail on my part since i am a jrpg fan .

OT: I choose FFXIII.The visuals are nice, the game is fun , combat is fun , difficulty is good, story is meh. It is easily the most challenging of the 4 (Except maybe star ocean on hard mode) .

I would avoid Eternal sonata like the plague, Worst JRPG this gen.

Are all the PSOne FFs available on PSN? And, if so, are they ported as-is or are they enhanced any?

Everybody is always talking about how good Persona is so I'll go with Persona but FFXII being the only game from you list I've played was a little...err well...lets just say FF12 did somethings right at least.

Tales of Vesparia is my favorite out of all of those, in my opinion the game is a masterpiece, I love the story, the characters are all good, for once a story where the vagabond doesn't hook up with the princess (just a personal thing) and the combat is excellent

You definitely need to try them, the combat is very good, and it has very good story lines and characters, Tales of the Abyss, the one before Vesparia, had a few character flaws (main character was a ***** through half the story) but Vesparia managed to have a main character who has some pretty major character flaws but is still a lovable character

If you have a PS2 Persona 3+4 are really good. Just stay reaaaaaally far away from Eternal Sonata.
This man is full of wisdom and is very handsome, so you should listen to him verily. Especially the bit about Eternal Sonata. Also, that bit about Persona.

quality (or at least decent) 360 JRPGs:
Tales of Vesperia
Resonance of Fate
Magna Carta 2
Enchanted Arms
Eternal Sonata (screw what people say. it was a good game with some great music. although the PS3 version is better, since the story is actually complete. but then again, same can be said about Vesperia. except the 360 vesperia still makes complete sense. just missing a few things. but US doesn't get PS3 Vesperia because PS3 Eternal Sonata flopped... go figure.)

360 JRPGs to stay away from:
Final Fantasy XIII
Star Ocean 4
Infinite Undiscovery
Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey

Hehe seems like Eternal Sonata is very polarizing. I have it so I'll eventually try it.

Been playing Vesperia for about an hour and a half now. It's my first "Tales" game so I'm still getting used to the combat system. Got my shit rocked by Zagi in Flynn's room. Beat him on my 4th try (lol nub).

Combat pacing takes some getting used to. Seems like attacks have a big follow-through so you can't attack and immediately block. Also haven't gotten the hang of using other Artes. Just got a second one which is A + Up but I sometimes end up jumping instead of executing the attack.

Characters seem cool but I'm already not a fan of Zagi. I don't mind my villains being evil or bat-shit insane but he seems pretty cookie-cutter evil. Then again, I've just met him so hopefully they will flesh out his character. I am liking Yuri though. Hasn't come across as your typical do-gooder hero or hyper-energetic bright-eyed kid.

Still don't know what the major arc is, just the setting. Will probably get into the main story once Yuri and Estellise meet up with Flynn.

I think you should start with Star Ocean: Last Hope. Some said that they couldn't stand the characters, but I found the game to be very enjoyable, it not taking itself seriously doesn't hurt. After finishing that, I would recommend Resonance of Fate.

As for the others, I haven't played much of FFXIII, only played the demo of Vesperia, I didn't care for Eternal Sonata, and I haven't trying Magna Carta 2.

hey now blue dragon and star ocean TLH are both really good, but i cant say the same for enchanted arms.(the game play leaves much to be desired) as for your thing with eternal sonata my only problem is it was it decided to be both a tales game and a final fantasy game which just didnt fell right to me.

Of those, I'd say FF 13 or Eternal Sonata.

FF13 has a somewhat slow beginning, but it has some really great character development as the story goes on - better than almost any other JRPG I've ever played outside the Xenosaga franchise.

Eternal Sonata has a wonderfully unique combat system and is a lot of fun, but the boss fights can be rather unforgiving. To put it mildly.
