For those who have played Pokemon, which type of starter do you normally choose and why? Also, who is your favorite starter Pokemon?

Me, I normally like to pick the Grass type Pokemon. I usually base my decision based on the design of the starter, since I like to play the games without spoiling them. And for the most part, I find some of the Grass types have the best looking designs in my opinion. Although when I finally get around to playing Gold/Silver, that may change.

Also, my favorite starter is Snivy.

I normally play each game once through with each starter, and my preferences for each type are all over the place. Charmander is my favorite from Gen I, Totodile from Gen II, Mudkip from Gen III, Turtwig from Gen IV, and Snivy from gen V. Out of every single starter, though, Mudkip is my favorite.

I have only played Blue and Silver so far, and both of them I picked water starters. Planning on getting either Black or White, and I'm pretty sure I'm going for the fire one.

I tend to pick fire most of the time, I've only ever picked the other types once. Water for Mudkip and grass for Snivy.

My starter choices are completely arbitrary and based on how cute the pokemon are. I went with Piplup in Pearl (which is way overpowered) and Snivy in Black. Snivy gets some pretty cool moves later on so I'm happy with my choice there too.

I tend to go with grass as I like their style (healing and damage).

But my real preference is to find a friend and grab all the starter pokemon via trades. (Though I've been told this doesn't work in B/W anymore because you have to save before you trade. At the very least, you can't return the favor for the friend.)

Usually water, but I generally try to just pick the one I like best. As it happens, my favorite starter for 3 of the 5 generations is water.

My absolute favorite is swampert (which I established to myself long before I heard of that one particular meme, btw)

its been almost entirely fire, until B/W decided that fire was too awesome and made the fire starter (pun...) a freaking pig, so i went with the water starter for the first time.

didnt stop me from trading over my infernape from diamond though.

I prefer going by which looks cooler, then later by which I prefer. However, the type I have most often picked is fire. Squirtle is my favorite though, followed by Torchic.

Squirtle > Charmander > Bulbasaur
Cyndaquil > Chikorita > Tododile
Torchic > Grecko > Mudkip

(Never played past Gen III)

I tend to go by looks, which usually leads to me picking the Fire choice. However, I have begun to branch a lot recently.

R/B: I used to be entirely about the Charmander, but since I realised what a swell guy Blastdad could be I now go for Squirtle.

G/S/C: Cyndaquil is pretty awesome, and Typhlosion was utterly broken in the originals, so he always used to be mine. However, in the remakes Typhlosion can no longer single-handedly demolish the League first time round, so I go for the FREAKING CROCODILE.

R/S/E: Torchic, and nothing else. Kung-fu fire chicken for the win.

D/P/Pt: Turtwig. Nothing says badass like a walking, breathing, herbivorous continent on legs.

B/W: Smugleaf, obviously.

Usually fire, but I've recently started playing White and Jesus Mother Frakking Christ does the fire pokemon and its evolutions look stupid. I had to break the pattern and go for water instead.
