Always fire. Even in Black. Fire is my favourite type, I even usually have two fire type Pokemons always with me in my team, and while it's not really all that helpful, I can't help myself. I didn't have much problems in any generation though. To me, "Catch 'em all" usually gets down to "Catch 'em all fire types".

Depends on what I think is the coolest.

In the first gen I like all of them equally, maybe Charmander is a fave.
In the second Chicorita.
third, my least favourites, I guess Mudkip. Although Torchic for a fighting-pokemon I don't totally hate.
Fourth, Turtwig.
5th is again gen where I like all of them equally.

My favourite type is Ghost, and I have pretty much always had one in my team the first playthrough. Second fave type is Dark, and there are no Dark starters, unfortunately.

EDIT: In one of the games for Gamecube, you start with Eevee. I'd say that's the best starter to have, I like all of it's evolutions, and you can choose it to evolve into different types.

I started with fire, but after gen 2 I haven't liked them so I switched to Grass. Water has mostly been my least favorite. I think my favorite starter of all time is a tie between Charmander and Turtwig though.

EDIT:
Since other people have been doing it this way,

Gen 1: Charmander
Gen 2: Cyndaquil
Gen 3: Treeko
Gen 4: Turtwig
Gen 5: Snivy

I suppose that there has never been a water type that was my favorite, though they are rarely my least favorite. Except for Mudkip, I liked Quagsire too much to tolerate Mudkips existence.

It depends on which one I think is the coolest...for the most part. Like, as awesome as Charizard is, I would chose Bulbasaur first because of how powerful the Sleep Powder-Solarbeam combo is. I've had Red long enough to have started multiple games so I've played with all 3 starters. I tend to switch types though as the generations go on.

For those who have played Pokemon, which type of starter do you normally choose and why? Also, who is your favorite starter Pokemon?

Me, I normally like to pick the Grass type Pokemon. I usually base my decision based on the design of the starter, since I like to play the games without spoiling them. And for the most part, I find some of the Grass types have the best looking designs in my opinion. Although when I finally get around to playing Gold/Silver, that may change.

Also, my favorite starter is Snivy.
I haven't played Pokémon since the days of Gold/Silver, but I always chose fire up to that point. Charmander was pretty awesome, considering he eventually evolved into a dragon. The classics are classic for a reason, my friend.

Gen 1. All three, but mainly Charmander.
Gen 2. Totodile or Cyndaquil, but mainly Cyndaquil.
Gen 3. All three, but mainly Treecko.
Gen 4. Haven't played, but Piplup looks ADORABLE!
Gen 5. Oshawott.

And my favorite Starter is still Charmander.

Grass. Always grass.

I don't have any real reason for it, it just happens. Whilst I tend to prefer the evolutions of the other starters, the primary form of grass is generally most appealing. For example, I love Charizard (who doesn't?), yet I chose Bulbasaur. And Typhlosion was awesome, but I still took Chikorita.

I've been taught by Red and Blue to pick the fire type first. I know that sounds strange but I've always found Fire to be more useful and have lasting appeal, especially in the late game. Of course, for Gym matches, this means that my starter is going to end up as specialty alternate most of the time but finding Fire types in the mid game besides Vulpix and Growlithe was damn annoying.

I personally don't seem to mind the rarity of fire types. I'm currently going through Red so I can finally beat the game and I found little to no need for a fire type. My Fearow was able to handle any grass and bug types I come across.

Although I do agree with you. Out of all the games I've played so far, I don't really recall any of them having very many fire type Pokemon.
