They were both the same game.
I dislike both equally.
(They were fucking boring)
Finally someone I can agree with. Not a fan of either game.

I enjoyed the urban environments in the original game, but I also prefer the weapon variety in the second game.

L4D2.
The first one's simplicity was nice, but it was just too simple. You end up playing the same campaign with the same weapons over and over again too soon, which is what Left 4 Dead tried not to do.
And chainsaws are cool.
And Zoey annoys me.

Gameplay in L4D2 is superior. I don't think anyone will doubt that.

But the survivors and campaigns of the first were far superior. C'mon Valve, daylight? Really kills the feel for me.

As I do love both games, Left 4 Dead 2 just missed the originality of the first game.
But than again, remaking a masterpiece like Left 4 Dead is near to impossible without it feeling like a cheap ripoff or a bad sequel.

They needed to test out something new. And they made a good game. I just wish there was less or more sunlight.

But both of them have missed the vehicle section. Would be fun to drive and shoot zombies as you go, until the car have a battery problem or something so you have to defend your spot for one minute before you can drive on to the safe room.

I liked all the survivors in L4D much better than the sequel, though Nick is fairly amusing. And, in truth, I had more fun with the original. Not that #2 is bad by any means; I heartily recommend it; but with #1 it felt a lot more fresh and new, plus there were moments of calm from time to time with no horde or specials. While this made things a little easier, it also gave more build up when things got tense and crowded.

Now, #2 does offer more variety and higher difficulty in the campaigns, so that's a point in it's favor, and the increased variety of specials adds more flavor to it. What I wish, though, is that the old campaigns and old characters could be played in #2 as well; the gameplay in 2 might not be MUCH better than 1, but there are still improvements, yet I also like a lot of the old material. I frankly don't care if the old missions also have all the new special infected and combat rules; that would still be fun (and probably better), but I would like the opportunity to play them and have the old characters too.

I really do miss Francis, Zoey, Louis, and Bill. Those guys were great; Valve did an excellent job on them. Their lines added a lot of sarcasm and humor to the Zombie Apocalypse.

I'm kinda glad they didn't have a vehicle section. Every game I've played with vehicles (besides racing games) has had awkward controls for vehicles; but the key thing remains that even IF they got vehicles perfectly, being in one detracts from the oppression and hazard of all the zombies around. Though, it would be very amusing to try to ram a tank at 60 mph and see who wins...

L4D has definitely better characters, but I still prefer L4D2 for it's greater variety in gameplay and environments.

Plus, decapitating zombies with an axe is just too satisfying to not pick L4D2.

No doubt that there are custom maps that cater to your wishes.

Admittedly, I haven't looked too hard, but I haven't found any L4D2 mods yet. Know any good sites for custom maps?

Halo got a kind of good vehicle control. The only bad part is that the reload button is the SAME as the one to dismount the vehicle.
It's a pain in the ass when you're tired and forget that you don't really need to reload the attached machine-gun.

Still, I doubt the players would be allowed to control the vehicle, since it's a linear game.

But the thought of ramming a tank is really sweet. ^.^

My clan usually gets their maps from this site [http://www.l4dmaps.com/], and I hope that doesn't count as advertising as I'm not affiliated with that site in any way, shape or form.

I must admit that I haven't really looked either. Knowing that L4D had quite a large custom map making community, I pretty much assumed L4D2 had it too. Combine that with the fact that L4D1 is still much loved and as we can see often preferred for their levels, I find it very likely that more than one modder must've thought "Let's port those maps to L4D2." That is, if Valve allows that.

Awesome, my vote has exactly balanced the result...!

L4D2 all the way, with the addition of realism versus it's now become 100% more critical to work as a team. L4D was great, but it's like an old computer; nice to remember but surpassed by better things...

Also, the AI in 2 is a lot smarter and works as a team. That is one BIG factor in it's favour... when you find yourself cursing the director for throwing a smoker, spitter and hunter on you in a co-ordinated fashion, it's got to be a good thing :p

If they released L4D2 first and L4D never happened that would have been SOOOOO much better but as it is I felt it was just more of the same and got bored of it really easily... also, I didnt find it as scary as L4D... and the multiplayer was screwy in L4D2.

Left4Dead distinctly lacks the necessary volume of Ellis to be as awesome as the sequel.
Plus, the passing adds Zoey, and Ellis gets a crush. :D

wait, what? That sounds awesome. Also, I need to play L4D2 tonight. I'm drunk, and for some weird reason that means my accuracy and reactions are at their peak (in video games. I'm not willing to test this with real weapons, though I do have both real weapons and much alcohol).

Cool. Thanks for the site man; I'll have to check them out.
