There are only three outside of WOW that are worth your money. Guild Wars 2, The Old Republic, and the new W40k game, i would wait until all three are out, then decide on one of those. Giuld Wars 2 would be my pick though, the Old Rupublic sounds awesome for sure, but what they are doing with Guild Wars 2 sounds like its going to a damn fun game.

City of Heroes/City of Villains.

Free 14 day trials.

Incredible costume choices. At 1st level. Capes? That's level 20. 95% of everything else? You got it now.

Wide-ranging difficulty settings. From pretty easy to ridiculously hard. Change 'em as often as you like for no cost. Think you can take on a x8 spawn at +4 levels?

Immersive back-story. Multiple threads, multiple secrets and reveals. WHY are the Clockwork robots vulnerable to psychic damage?

Large, established, FRIENDLY playerbase. Forum regulars COMPETE to answer questions first, and accurately!

Mission Architect: Make your own mission and story arc. (Not on trial, sorry!). Make your own enemies and allies. Put yourself in!

No "holy trinity" of tank/healer/dps required. Make your team, run with it. Warning! May require adjustment of tactics. You know... thought?

95% of content is solo-able. Where exceptional challenges are going to show, or multiple persons are required, you will be warned.

Travel powers and zone teleporters allow you to get into the action fast. No need to jog through the jungle for 20 minutes to get to a mission. Friendly veterans may buy you a jet pack, which you can use at 1st level. Get one for yourself at level 5 through the Safeguard/Mayhem mission. Get a permanent travel power at 14. Or not. Up to you!

95% mission instances mean no spawn camping required. It's your mission. Just you and whoever you decided to team with can access it.

No "add-ons" required. The interface is complete as is. Although, www.paragonwiki.com is a great resource.

Archetypes (classes) are wide ranging, and can have very different playstyles, even within the archetype. Force-field defenders are very different from Radiation Defenders which are different from Kinetic Defenders which are different from Empathy Defenders. Cookie-cutter builds are around, but are not required. Do it your way!

"Supersidekicking" means a level 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 can go into the level 30's mission OR the level 10's OR the level 50s, and ALL will be challenged and rewarded! Play with your friends and form a team, no matter the level!

Invention system means crafting new power for your character. Or temporary powers. Or costume items. Or temporary buffs. Or respecs. Or play the market for the heck of it!

Casual friendly. Log in, knock out a mission in 20 minutes or less. Or form for the 2-4hrs task forces/ strike forces. Heck, with team agreement, you don't even have to finish those in one sitting!

All in one box. Free trial. Architect Edition $20 gets you your first month, and a bonus package. (I suggest the Magic Package. THe costume pieces are snazzy, and the Fortune power is useful on teams. The Robot package does have some cool techno-pieces, and the Self-Destruct power is fun, although somewhat... limited.)

I'm with the Mentor Project, the goal of which is to help newer players get the most out of their time in the City. PM me if you are interested.

EDIT: On Skype, I hear my buddies groaning over "grinding for X" in other games. I find it very odd. I play for fun!

There is "endgame content", but City Of is "all game content". Have fun and fight crime (or commit it!) whatever your level.

Depends... Guild Wars 2 will be free monthly and if you're on a budget I'd strictly go for that. It's going to be a good game regardless, but the fact it's free monthly is a huge plus. And I enjoyed the original Guild Wars and what they're doing with this one is pretty much fixing all of the problems I had with the first and making it something I will really enjoy.

I can't speak for you in that regard however, but strictly speaking budget... Guild Wars 2 is the way to go.

The Old Republic I am wary of... I want it to be good, I want to play it and I want lifetime to be freed from the shackles of the burden known as monthly payments. Where it was once used to ease the customer into purchasing something, it's now just a pain in the ass. Very much so.

It is BioWare however and they may give me a game I see the need to pay monthly for. Again, if you can afford it I'd recommend this over Guild Wars 2 because you can always pick up Guild Wars 2 at a later date and play whenever you want.

That's the great thing about these two games. They can work well together when it comes to money. So if you can afford it, I'd go The Old Republic and then Guild Wars 2. If not, get Guild Wars 2 to tide you over until you can afford The Old Republic.

FFXIV might be what I am looking for to finally replace the wound Galaxies left in my heart. I remain cynical though.
I don't see how it can... because I too have a gaping wound in my heart from when they destroyed - truly - the only MMO that I ever loved. I may like the others, but that was the only one for me... and now it's gone...

But I hope it does, so at least one of us can move on.

Find another game genre, MMOs are too time consuming.

No offense to you MMO lovers but watching my friend vanish into another world and bring his laptop to hangouts was not ideal in my mind.

I doubt it will. Nothing will ever be as open and free as that game was. A game where you truly choose your path and glory....

I just hope FFXIV delivers this time unlike how i was disappointed by FFXI and its same promises....

I'm never going to move on either brother...

Guild Wars and Star Wars have yet to be released. So I guess I'll try out the WoW trial first. 2011 better hurry up.

Guild Wars... it's free to play, and it's a good game, what more could you want out of an MMO?

If Mister T tells you to play WoW, you play WoW!

In all fairness, WoW is a awesome game.
And unlike some people here have claimed. It won't eat your soul, or social life if you won't let it.

GW2 all the way! Checked Anet's blog? What they are telling about the game sounds insane!

I had the same urge some weeks back and ignored those three :D

I found Dragonica : http://dragonica.thqice.com/mediacenter_theater.html
100% free, side scrolling beat em up RPG. It has dungeons different classes and skill trees. Lots of quests which are devided to hero and adventure (more like story or exp grind).

I found it a welcome change from guildwars and Warcraft style, click to win. You use the keyboard to control so it goes well on my laptop. You're more involved with your charactor; you do the fighting not the auto attack.

Wait for TOR.

WoW is great fun IF you have friends to play with. I spent stupid amounts of time on WoW when I had friends at a similar level but as soon as I had to play solo, I got bored quite quickly.

Actually, you may as well get GW2 as well. I played all the original GW games up until about three years ago (finished the main campaign on six characters and the community started to die out) but if GW2 is anything like the original, it's something a bit different with a superb storyline and free to play.

I'm not even going to begin to decide through your poll, for a start, WoW may be quite awesome to some but in reality its a soul sucking monster that dwells within the computer and asks for a monthly subscription in return.

Having said that, most F2P (Free to Play) MMO's are pretty lame, however games such as Perfect World, Flyff, etc are pretty decent.

I'm going to be immodest. I believe myself to be quite the MMO gamer, although more casual then hardcore. (It's called having a life, it's amazing) and I underlined Perfect World because, despite it's futile attempts at encouraging you to pay, its one of the best Free to Play games out there.

That's the one I'd recommend.

Well as I have just run out of money I have a large Wow shaped hole in my life, sad I know I am now currently downloading E.V.E why? I don't know my mates say it's good. They also favour frag grenade enemas so expect me to vanish of the boards!

Voted for WoW because the other two titles aren't out yet. WoW has proven itself to be the overall best MMO on the market right now. If you can wait, then wait for The Old Republic. It's probably going to be the only MMO that can compete with WoW.

Although, I must say a lot of the new MMOs look great. Guild Wars 2 looks cool, and FFXIV needs a lot of work, but it might be worth playing.

There are 2 possible options.

Hold out until The Old Republic comes out.

Hold out even longer until Dark Millenium comes out.

Either way, I'll be playing both at once. I knew there was a reason God gave us 4 limbs damnit.

if you're not a huge fan of bioware or star wars, forget TOR. I'm not a fanboy so i actually read about the game. individual quests are mostly instanced and in a 4 page interview they talked about the dialog for 1 1/2 pages. It's Conan all over again :(

If you want the classic elf human dwarf orc with swords, go for WOW and nothing else. It's cute, fun and really easy. It's the kind of game that talks in a soothing vioce, holds your hand all the time and tells you what to do next so you won't get lost or confused. Age: 14 and over

The middle i'd say is APB coming out late June. Cops and robbers MMO really. Fun, fast, heavily customizable, and made by the guy who lead GTA 1 through San Andrean (you know, the fun ones).(I'm guessing) It's the kind of game that takes care of you, but a couple of hours a day puts you in the back yard, where you can go wild.

On the other side of the park is EVE. Hard game to learn, a lot of death for you and your enemies. Rule #1 in EVE: never use something you don't afford to lose. But that's because this is the perfect sandbox. Half to 2/3 of the game is free for all, you have a completely player driven economy and new stuff coming up. This is the type of game that teaches you how to do everything you could possibly want and then fucks off. Age: 18 and over...if you don't act 18, don't bother, coz 75% of corps (aka guilds) won't accept you => most have a RL comes first rule.

TL;DR: WOW for the classic fantasy (lol wat), easy pretty gameplay where everyone's special
APB (end of june) for cops and robbers MMO or GTA (pre 4) MMO. Fun shooter, looks awesome.
EVE for the perfect sandbox where players control the gameplay. good or bad, it's people making it that way, not the devs.

P.S.: just remembered: you can tell at an instant what kind of game philosophy eve has, when you see the rap vid made by the devs called Harden The Fuck Up (CCP - HTFU on youtube)

Well, if you have a sudden urge, WoW. If you can wait 8 months then definitely TOR, WoW is not what it used to be.
