PS: T followed by BG.

Now if you can get the bundle at GoG or something, you get Temple of Elemental Evil too, I believe, which I personally loathe because combat is about the only thing done right in that game and I can't play a game for combat alone. But, some fans really like it for that fact.

All of them. They're dirt cheap and you'd never have to worry your pretty head about having to buy another game again.

I'd like to throw in a recommendation for Arcanum of Steamworks and Magic Obscura. It's basically a steampunk D&D done like the old Fallout games and I've been hacing great fun with it since I got it from gog.com
I chose all of those games already in the pool because I already bought them and was trying to choose which one to play first.

Does Neverwinter Nights 2 count as "old school"? I mean, it's fairly recent compared to the rest of the list.
Probably not but I still own it and I figured I might as well throw it on there.

That shit aint oldschool.
You want oldschool, try the original Phantasy Star games (1-4) or if that's too RP for you, try Soul Blazer.
The Phantasy Star games were western style RPGs with Japanese style look to it. And they were HUGE.

I've actually only played the Divinity series out of those. Well I've played fallout 3 but it's so different from the old ones, which I haven't played, that I'm not counting it. I haven't played Divine Divinity but I've played the sequel and it was good.

ToEE was a game with a fantastic combat system marred by a offensively cheating AI.

If you have no knowledge of D&D, you should probably start with Planescape: Torment rather than any other D&D-based RPG. Or try a game that's not based on D&D at all (haven't played Divinity, but Black Isle Fallout RPGs are among my favourites).

But anyway, Torment > all.

Play Ur Quan Masters AKA Star Control II and find out where your precious Mass Effect Bioware signature series was RIPPED OFF FROM!!!!

http://sc2.sourceforge.net/downloads.php

It's free too.
Well I've already heard all the Mass Effect ripoff claims before so I knew this. I heard people say it was a total Babylon 5 ripoff too. Granted none of them showed evidence so there is that. Also if you go look over Bioware's track record none of their games are that original save their first couple. Case in point.

Fallout? Then Planscape:Torment? The Baldur's Gate. Or, just start playing one, pick up the other, go back to the first, pick up the third, go back to the second, and so on and so on, until you finish one of them, then continue playing the other two. Or, you know, throw a die, and assign a game to each face.

I haven't played all of the options, but I would definitely suggest Baldur's Gate. I love the whole series, but I haven't played the console ones.

I'm still unable to get my head around this massive love for Baldur's Gate. Maybe the second game is just really good and I'll never know it because my pride refuses to allow me to play it without going through Baldur's Gate 1, which is a boring, tedious, high-fantasy turd.

Be a maverick and play Planescape Torment. Or be a slightly lesser maverick and play the first two Fallouts. Or be a MASSIVE maverick and play the Icewind Dale series.

Planescape: Torment

Others afterward (though from that list I'd say Divine Divinity and NWN 1 & 2 are the low point on the pile), but do yourself a favor an enjoy PS:T first and foremost. You will not regret it.

Of the list I'd say Baldur's Gate. Pretty solid game, quite fun, not really much more to say really. Although I haven't played a couple of the others.

Then I'd scorn you for not having Might and Magic on the list. 6 through 8 are pretty good, with earlier games being definitely old school but graphically not my cup of tea, and 9 being fairly radically different and I don't like change. Plus if you play Heaven's Mandate: Might and Magic VI: The mandate of heaven (Now with extra heaven related mandate) you can play the drinking game where you take a shot in the opening sequence every time it says "The mandate of heaven".

The list is made of games that I already own. Hence why there's a couple of odd choices like Divine Divinity and Neverwinter Nights 2.

Then I guess the scorning is for not owning Might and Magic. It's on GoG right now, what are you waiting for?

But of course, I jest. Though it's definitely worth checking out in the future.

I don't even like JRPGs and I enjoyed Phantasy Star 1&2 on Sega. (as i did Shadowrun and D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun)
If you liked 1 & 2, you should really play 4. Even all these years later, it's still epic.
I know what you mean. For a while I thought I liked jrpgs because I liked the PS games so much.

It took a couple of FFs to set me straight.
