Wait but in BG 2 you still level right? So you start mid-level and then just improve? I love character progression, I guess that means I have to play 1 before 2.
Uh, yeah, sorry for being unclear on that. You start at the cap from the first, and you level up from there. It's been a long while since I've played it, but I believe 2 starts you out at around level 9, depending on class.

(As of now I'm leaning toward Planescape, because the cover looks amazing and I've only heard good things about it.)
Haha that is hilarious because most people blame the cover for the reason it didn't sell well. Amazing game though, you can't go wrong. If you get PST please PM me and I will direct you to some player made patches and mods you will NEED on modern systems.

BUT I think Baldur's Gate 2 is better. Go for that IMO! You won't regret a second of it. Oh man I get a stiffy thinking about that game. I'm about 2 weeks from loading it up again for about my 10th play through. I seem to play it once or twice a year.
Yeah? I think it looks awesome. A big, blue face. What's not to love about that. Looks unique and intriguing.

Looks a bit ugly in my opinion :p Blue and Orange and the cover says nothing about the game itself. Mind you neither does Baldur's Gate II's cover. I just don't know, doesn't seem to fit.

I picked Planescape Torment. The story and the characters so made it worth it, good times!

Honestly, I don't think you could go wrong with any of those titles, but I'd have to cast my vote for Baldur's Gate, I've played that game so much, my discs don't work right anymore.

I was torn between Baldurs Gate II and Neverwinter Nights. I love them both, really I do, but I was stuck. Yeah, theyre very similar, but honestly, I just think NWN entertained me more, and kept me going longer. I vote for NWN.

Planescape: Torment had the best plot but terrible combat.

Icewind Dale 2 had the best combat but a terrible plot.

Arcanum had the most freedom of choice but the worst pacing.

Neverwinter Nights had the best modding community but a terrible original campaign.

Baldur's Gate 2 is the only one that the best of all four without any of the downsides. Great plot, great combat, tons of freedom, and a modding community which ten years after its release continue to create new content!

Baldur's Gate 2 wins.

As for BG 1 vs. 2, think of it like Mass Effect. Sure you *can* skip to ME2 if you want, but it wont be nearly as good. Same with BG2. You can import your character from the first game into the second, so not only will your character be more capable than a default BG2 char (In BG1 there are permanent stat boosts you can find for your character!) but there's also some equipment that carries over and you'll have a better grasp of the plot.

As for gameplay BG1 isn't quite as good as 2, but there are mods that improve it drastically. You can use the BG1 Tutu mod to import the first game into the second games engine too, allowing you to play BG1 at higher resolutions with all the improvements the second game made to the gameplay. There's also the BG1 NPC project mod that makes the dialogue and party interaction more like the second games.

With those two mods installed there's absolutely no reason not to play BG1, unless you hate awesomeness that is, and the experience is so much more satisfying if you take one character from the very start of BG1 to the mind-blowing ending of BG2:Throne of Bhall too!

On a side note, this is the second topic today where I've ended up typing all this. Is there some sort of classic pc rpg renaissance going on I didn't know about?

I loved Planescape Torment the most. Hilarious teammates and a ridiculous amount of choice. Plus it has several very wicked twists involved.

It's set in Sigil, the hub city of Planescape -- nothing is boring or normal in that game. And as others have mentioned, it rules. I loved BG 1 and 2, NWN is good. Icewind Dale I never actually played.

the first baldur's gate, solely because i played through it with my friend about 5 times on the ps2 co-op.
That's not the first Baldur's Gate. That's Dark Alliance. I loved that game. Beat it a couple of times in Co-op.

This thread is about the PC Baldur's Gate titles which are vastly different.
touche!

Best Overall RPG Of All Time - Baldur's Gate 2; name a category of game design, that game has likely aced it.

Best Story In an RPG (And Likely In Gaming) - Planescape: Torment; somewhat shakier gameplay than BG, but still solid.

How do Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 differ?
BG2 has better graphics, more of everything (spells, skills, items, etc.), is more polished and has better level design. While it is a direct sequel to BG1 (with the main character being transferrable), the game still assumes you didn't play the first one and catches you up on the key events.

Dark Alliance came out in 2001. The first Baldur's Gate on the PC came out in 1998.

EDIT: Sorry, misread your post. I thought you were saying Dark Alliance predated Baldur's Gate. Disregard this post.

I'll say NWN is the best due to the extended content and mods available and the superb character modification and combat systems.
The best indivdual campain has to be baldurs gate I and II as a set.

Planescape torment is probably the most original of the bunch. So I voted for that game. BG 1 & 2 are both awesome as well. I've played Icewind dale as well... but I never really got into it. It felt like a less cool version of BG.
