As someone who is unimpressed by the series as a whole, I am curious to know which of the main games is best regarded by the fans of Resident Evil.

Fire away.

That's a rather tough choice. I've played every RE game except for Revelations and Mercenaries 3D (God I want to play Revelations so badly), but....nnnnngh.

Fuck it, I'll go with 4. I know basically everything about the series and can recite obscure RE trivia off the top of my head, but even I have to admit that the series really started getting good with 4 when they mostly made RE4 a standalone game that had few ties with the rest of the franchise. Then they fucked it up by bringing it all back in RE5. Then they fucked it up even worse by inventing entirely new elements for RE6 when they had so many open plotlines...I can only conclude that whoever is currently in charge of RE's production really needs a refresher course on RE's story. Like the whole Jake Mueller thing which was totally pointless. All they had to do was make him be Alex Wesker and the entire storyline for RE6 would have been completely unchanged. But no. They pull a completely new character from the ass end of nowhere for no reason at all. GOD I HATE JAKE SO MUCH.

...
...
...A-Anyway, yeah. I vote for RE4.

Edit: Even if you're only doing the numbered iterations, how come RE0 isn't on the list?

I am partial to the classic style of Resident Evil. I think the gamecube remake of Resi1 was the best. Resident Evil 3 is a close second because it lets you roam through the city. The first 10 minutes of Resident Evil 2 are motherfucking brilliant as well.

Tough question . Putting graphics asside , i'll go with RE 2 . It pretty much nails the aspects of survival horror in my opinion . Back then the game was being marketed as survival horror and that's exacly what it delivered . A lot of the mechanics will seem dated by today's standards though . Limited saves , limited ammo , limited health items , limited item capacity , no checkpoints, very real threat of death . As for horror we got , diverse enemies , quick enemies , bullet sponge enemies , unkillable enemies , jump scares , creepy atmosphere, creepy music, feeling of being traped in a hostile environment , gore .

As for the actual game . We got a nice 10 hour game on your first play through , with two characters , each with two scenerios . Then we got 2 secret characters (hunk/tofu ). Plus you can best the game in under 3 hours if you know what your doing . The game is a true classic to the genre .

Resident evil 4 is a close second . It went a more actiony route , while keeping survival and horror elements . It's the perfect blend of two worlds . It brought about a nice change of pace. Broadening it's horrizons for those who like action games and those who like survival/horror games .

The problem with RE5/6 in my opinion is that it dropped it's survival/horror fans and focused soley on the action demographics . Which is perfect for them , but not so much for the survival horror demographic . But i cannot blame capcom for that , survival horror is a genre that is dead and VERY niche . It kinda went out of style .

So basically , the game went from survival/horror(RE1-3) , to action survival/horror ( RE4) to action/horror ( RE5-6) . So a lot of people wouldn't touch the first three and another batch of people won't touch the last two .

The only two I'm familiar with are the first two, and from them I'd probably say the first one. Both are pretty cheesy little fun games that aren't to be taken seriously, but I invested many hours of my childhood into them. I should replay them sometime. I just remember the first one being more interesting, the characters I suppose. That Leon in the second was a pure-boring character. At least in the first they were unintentionally funny.

The first one will always be my fave.

Unlike most RE fans I think 4 is where it started to get shit.

I despise QTE's with a burning passion. That game had QTE's. I despise that game.

Quick note: I know people love 4, and I get why, and I love it too for all those same reasons.

However...

I was hardcore into 2, and to me, out of this list 3 will always be the best as it refined the mechanics of 2 and made them much tighter, had an actually pretty awesome storyline (for a b-horror-movie, which Resident Evil has always been, unfortunately however the pulp has gotten so thick at this point it's undrinkable) with branching paths and multiple endings, and an extremely fun mini-game that is still worth playing today, not to mention that it unlocks things that make future playthroughs more fun and amusing.

Just a generally awesome game.

However, one game you didn't list that actually is my personal favorite; the REmake for the cube. It was hard, pretty fucking absurdly scary, fun, clever, and looked and sounded beautiful while retaining all the charm of the series. That game is the only real way to play RE1, and really now that the series will never be the same (which I guess was really clear by 4, I just had hoped for a spin off series to retain the style) I feel it's the best representation of the original Resident Evil formula.

Call it T-Virus Platinum, and spread it to everyone you meet.

Side note: I just came from a zombie walk today, tons of umbrella soldiers (whom I naturally avoided), even saw a Clare. I shouted out to her "Clare! Get to the Police Station! I'll meet you there!" over a crowd of zombies. Good times.

Edit: After reading a few of the others 2 needs to get noted again for the amount of content it gave us. at least 2 uniqueish playthroughs and all the bonus missions. When I think about just the sheer size of it all that is damn impressive.

While RE4 is pretty damn awesome, RE5 might be my favourite for one reason. The co-op.
On your own, it's just a short RE4 with a story that was written by a Neanderthal, but with someone sitting next to you, it's downright brilliant. I played it with my older brother, and we had so much fun riffing on its story, but at the same time, coordinating with him to take down the approaching hoard was fantastic. We even did a playthrough together on Professional difficulty, and it was some of the most fun I've ever had in co-op.
Bottom line, single player, RE4 wins hands down. Co-op, RE5 is amazing fun.
For the record, my poll choice was RE4, because the overall experience was better.

Resi 1 is my favourite, closely followed by 2. I'd say 2 was the better game though, I just liked the haunted house setting a lot more.

3 was okayish but kinda forgettable, all I really remember from that is what the nemesis looks like.

Veronica was good for the first half but the later bits went downhill.

I hated 4, first time I saw the dwarf thing I was like "fuck that, I'm outta here". Not played any since then So I can't give an opinion on them.

Primarily my like or dislike is related to the setting/plot/atmosphere rather than the game as a whole as in general. If I like the general premise of the plot then it's cool and I can ignore the shitty gameplay.

I'll go with 3. The ammo crafting mechanic was a nice change of pace and the Nemesis is quite frankly the most fun monster Umbrella's created. He's about the only time I've ever been playing a RE game and was apprehensive of him showing up because he's such an ammo sponge. There's a point where you fight him three times in relatively quick succession and can really be in trouble if you haven't prepared. He's basically Mr. X from RE2 done right. (Mr. X is too slow, every single time except the first time I killed him before he reached me. Nemesis? ************ runs faster than you can.)

Well, she was pretty annoying, from what I remember. Though I wasn't too familiar with her, as I lost the second disc that contained her playthrough, so Resident Evil 2 was more or less exclusively Leon for me.

It's got to be the RE 1 remake on the cube followed by 2 for me the series started going down hill at 3.I did enjoy 4 wii edition but didn't manage to finish it because of that annoying girl screaming Leon every 3 seconds. But the worst ever RE game has to be gun survivor omg how bad was that.
...But I liked Gun Survivor and Dead Aim...

It was a rail shooter where you controlled 100% of the movement. What's so bad about that?

My three favourite Resident Evil games in order:
I enjoyed Resident Evil 2 the most, then Resident Evil 4 and then Resident Evil: Outbreak File #2.

I think the popular opinion is Resident Evil 4 but my favorite one is Resident Evil 2 followed by Resi-3. I played through the entirety of Resi-5 and my favorite aspect of the game was how you could replay the same level a dozen or so times so as to afford the super-fuck-you gun and enough ammo to make the rest of the game (to a point I suppose) a very violent walk in the park.

Also I've never played the Gamecube remake of Resident Evil...or Resident Evil: Code Veronica...or Resident Evil 4.

Hey, wasn't there a GBC version of Resident Evil that had turn-based combat?
