anything that is not built like that god-forsaken xbox360 game, Enchanted Arms. That game blew. I blame more of it on the battle system than on the lame-ass story.

Real time/action like WoW, Dragon Age, Mass effect the mechanics switch up but the princaple stays the same things move it feels alive, turn based combat was fun for a time but seriously we have the technology now that we can ask why are you still using such an outdated system.

"old-fashioned" turn-based all the way for me.

It's by far and away my favourite system, because it doesn't rely on me to be quick enough (or press space/pause every few seconds).

Dragon Age: Journeys showed how this is done relatively well, but I find it useful in a variety of genres. Notable games being X-Com, Fallout, Jagged Alliance, Civilization, some of the Ultima games, Heroes of Might and Magic, King's Bounty...

Need I say any more?

Of course everyone has their preferences, and I wouldn't want to force my preference on anyone, but I would like to see a little bit of a return to a classic turn-based approach.

I prefer turn based. I agree with the strategy idea of an rpg, and hope that a more complex system will be created. Not unlike Chrono trigger with combinations, but a larger scale of move combinations and possibilities for unique arrangments of parties and game directions due to choices. I wish developers would revolutionize the RPG by looking back on turnbased. And not in the dumbed down way Dragon Quest games do it these day's.

The funnest ever was the system used in Mario and Luigi: Super Star Saga. It's turn-based, but when getting attacked you get a chance to dodge and when attacking you have to time the button right to maximize your damage. Man, do I love that game.

I prefer turn based, lets you work out a little strategy. If I want faster pace I'll play a FPS or something.

The one used in Morrowind, Oblivion and Fallout 3. The one in Fallout and Fallout 2 was also quite good.

the systems in Dragon Age is good, also like how Champions Online is set up, for JRPGs guess ATB i've kinda fallen away from those since there pretty much interechangable any more

ATB. You could set it to 'wait,' where it'll politely wait for you while you sift through the menu like in the CTB (in fact, FFX's CTB is an ATB with wait on), but I play with it on 'active' where it only pauses for the goddamned summons (who never get used for precisely that reason). Makes it challenging.

Valkyrie Profile 2.
Definitely this. I love Eternal Sonata for the fact that its system is very similar (although that doesn't have your whole party attacking at once).
I never got a chance to play Eternal Sonata--though if the entire game is paced on-par with the cutscene from Unskippable I don't think I could soldier through it.
