i actually spread it (mayo, butter, peanut butter, etc.) on the inside of the bread. that is, i pull 2 slices out every time. and whichever side is on the inside of the two slices, that's what i spread on. that way my spread doesn't go on the side my finger indent goes on.

Trick question; there is no top or bottom, because it's bread. Doesn't apply to me either way, though, since I don't use butter for anything. I'll spread jam on bread sometimes, though, in which case I spread it on whichever side is unlucky enough to be closest to me at the time.

I eat my bread three slices at a time, buttering both sides of the middle slice. That's how you make a proper bread sandwich.

Top or bottom?
Well, I like to think I'm versatile. I'll try anything once, at least.

Wait... can't you just flip bread over? Is there really a set top and bottom?

I'm so confused.

^ what he said, exactly what is the "bottom" of a slice of bread? It's like asking "which way is down" in space.

Wait, you don't know? Fine, I'll explain.

You see, this is the top of the bread:

and this is the bottom:

I can't believe that I have to explain this. I thought it was common knowledge!
Okay, yes I knew that. The way the OP said it confused me though.

So does this mean people only spread butter on half of a slice? 'Cause that doesn't make sense either.

Woah, Woah, Woah... When in the crap did bread slices suddenly get tops and bottoms? What's the difference!?!?!

OT: I spread my butter on bread like a true gentleman, on the crust and nowhere else.

I think what the OP is asking is what slice of bread do you butter in a sandwich, not one slice.

I don't eat butter on bread only toast. If you mean spread in general, then slice on the left hand side always get buttered and depending what else is in the sandwich I'll fold it so it's the bottem for cheese, veg and single meat sandwich. For multiple meats or largish sandwichs I'll put the source on what would become the top slice. If I have a jam and peanutbutter sandwich however where both sides have something on the world implodes.

Wait... You mean that there are people who put their spread/butter on the top side of their sandwich? What arbitrary silliness!... But my answer remains the same, I do it like a true gentleman and put it on the crust only.

Surely a slice of bread only has a top and a bottom after you butter it. The side you butter becomes the top, so it's always the top I guess.
